World?s biggest model of a bacterium magnifies E. coli two million times

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2011) ? The E.coli superbug has hit Birmingham -- but don't worry, this one isn't about to make you ill. It's a huge scientific model, certified by Guinness World Records as the largest ever. The model -- 'Bacterium E.coli magnified two million times' -- was installed at Aston University this week to show the internal structures of a bacterium without the need for a microscope.

The model was designed and built by microbiologist Dr Henry Tribe. The aim is to allow the public to gain an idea of the inner workings of the bacterium on a giant scale, with the model approximately five metres long and two metres tall. It showcases the DNA, proteins and other molecules of E.coli -- the parts that humans would normally never see.

Dr Tribe believes that the model allows the general public to gain a greater understanding and insight into E. coli. The model highlights the incredible abilities of the superbug, including its capability of creating 1850 different proteins in half an hour and its ability to 'swim' at 1000 revolutions per minute. Every one is host to the bacteria, however only a very few strains of E.coli cause the deadly food poisoning associated with it.

The model is currently on display to the public in the Main Reception of Aston University.

This week was packed with news on the mobile front, so it was easy to miss a few stories here and there. Here's some of the other stuff that happened in the wide world of wireless for the week of October 24, 2011:
  • Fan of white phones? Here ya go: the BlackBerry Bold 9900, Curve 9360 and Torch 9810 can be pre-ordered on Phones4U. If white doesn't do it for you, the Curve 9300 will be available in pink. [Stuff]
  • HTC has announced its partnership with Dropbox, which means you can get 5GB of available storage on any of the company's Android devices. [Twitter]
  • A few customers on Verizon's family plans have noticed a peculiar addition to the company's #DATA service; when the text showing the data usage arrives, it now mentions "shared," which may be an indication that Big Red's on its way to offering shared data plans in the near future. [Droid-Life]
  • Rumors have flown for some time about LG's attempt at reviving the Prada series by introducing the K2 (aka the P940), and now we're finally starting to see images of the Android device leak out. Apparently, it'll be less than 9mm thin, offer an 8MP camera, 1.3MP front-facing cam, 21Mbps HSPA+ and have a 4.3-inch display with 1,000 nits of brightness. [PhoneArena via UnwiredView]
  • Research in Motion announced BlackBerry Business Cloud Services for Microsoft Office 365, which extends Microsoft Exchange Online to the BlackBerry lineup. It's geared toward midsized businesses and enterprises. Head to the source for the details. [Microsoft-News]

An Overview of Dental Insurance

The money invested on dental surgeries and dental care is on the rise. Dental insurance helps the insurance policy holder have the amount spent on the dental care treatments through refunds. There are actually discount dental care plans which allow anybody to acquire heavy discounts on the dentistry costs. Teeth are our assets and they are vitally important just like any other organ in the body and also need good care. Dental insurance provides the policyholder with a listing of dentists by whom the services could be acquired on the market.

The policyholders must get the services only with the given listing of dentists. However most of the discount dental care plans do not exercise any type of restrictions as long as choosing the dentist on the policyholder's choice. Discount dental care plans are easier to receive as well as there is no age limit. Consequently ideal dental plans present higher support during heavy payments on the dentistry bills.

Inexpensive dental insurance plans:

There are many economical dental insurance plans that are mainly crafted for the children and spouse of the family. The family dental plans have reduced the expenses significantly for several dental care work just like cleaning, x-rays, fillings, uproot canals, orthodontics, fittings of braces and many others. The major aim of family dental insurance plans is to reduce the charges and as well provide dental care to the loved ones.

The sum is decreased with this dental insurance coverage because numerous dental insurance carriers provide free of charge or lessen amount dental care policy coverage for the children. The insurance coverage of these types of policies may differ broadly from one insurance company to another. Consequently just before selecting a plan as well as the insurance company the protection scope has to be checked out extensively. Family dental insurance is entirely more advanced than the individual dental insurance. They are both cheaper and money is preserved through reimbursements. The simplest and least difficult sort of dental insurance to get without any paper work for receiving the claims.

Important things to be checked before opting for the dental insurance coverage and policy:

The insurance holder need to make sure that everything is definitely covered under the dental insurance plan, as some will give you only checkup, that will be of no use if the insurance policy holder must get a full cover. When a good employer provides a dental insurance plan, it ought to be checked out for any coverage once again, as almost all of the companies do not provide full coverage to cut down the expense spent on the insurance policies however may give them for a benefit for the personnel. In these kinds of cases the staff should go for a private dental insurance policies covering the remaining dental treatment processes, which has been excluded in the personnel cover.

The waiting periods need to be examined. It is the time limit that the company will present the insurance policy holder to wait before he can enjoy the benefits of the plan. Certain policies may help make the policyholder wait for more than one year to take advantage of the benefit. If the policy owner likes to go for cosmetic dental surgeries just like teeth bleaching or whitening he or she should get a dental insurance plan which gives coverage, as only a few insurance companies provide such coverage for the higher payment.

(AP) ? General manager Jed Hoyer and assistant Jason McLeod are leaving the San Diego Padres to accept similar positions in the Chicago Cubs' front office.

Because Hoyer was still under contract, the Cubs have agreed to send the Padres a player to be named as compensation.

Both teams said Wednesday that they will hold news conferences after the World Series. The Padres will announce on Monday morning that Josh Byrnes will replace Hoyer as general manager. The Cubs will introduce Hoyer as GM and McLeod as senior vice president of scouting and player development at a date to be determined.

The deals have been in the works since Theo Epstein left his job as Boston Red Sox general manager and was hired by the Cubs as president of baseball operations.

Hoyer and Byrnes both worked under Epstein with the Red Sox. Byrnes is a former GM of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

"If we bring in someone as a general manager it will be because there is someone I think is one of the best and one of the brightest in the game," Epstein said Tuesday after he was introduced in Chicago. "Somebody who can make a real impact for the Cubs. We have a ton of work to do. It's going to be a lot of hard work. We're ready for it. ... I think it was important to develop a structure that allowed for the hiring of the GM, if we got the right person."

The moves give Byrnes the chance to once again serve as GM under Jeff Moorad.

Byrnes was hired as GM of the Diamondbacks in November 2005, when Moorad was one of Arizona's top executives. Byrnes and manager A.J. Hinch were fired by the Diamondbacks on July 1, 2010.

In March 2009, a group headed by Moorad began its purchase of the Padres on an installment plan. Moorad fired GM Kevin Towers after the 2009 season and hired Hoyer away from the Red Sox.

The Padres went 90-72 in 2010, leading the NL West for much of the season before stumbling in September and missing the playoffs. After Hoyer traded three-time All-Star slugger Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox for three prospects and outfielder Eric Patterson in December, the Padres struggled badly and finished last in the division at 71-91.

The Diamondbacks, who hired Towers as GM late in the 2010 season, won the division this season.

Hinch was hired as the Padres' vice president of professional scouting in September 2010. He was promoted to vice president-assistant GM last month and will replace McLeod.

Byrnes will work with a player payroll of between $53 million and $55 million ? one of the smallest in the majors. It'll be his turn to try to field a team suited to Petco Park, a pitcher-friendly ballyard where runs are hard to come by.

Epstein, Hoyer and McLeod worked together with the Red Sox and helped build teams that won the World Series in 2004 and 2007.

In 2005, Hoyer served as Boston's co-general manager for 44 days while Epstein briefly left the organization.

Hoyer was assistant GM under Epstein in Boston and, like his boss, is known for his ability to analyze data when evaluating players. Epstein said Tuesday that Hoyer had put together a computer-based information system program in San Diego that was similar to the one used by the Red Sox.

Hoyer had two years and a club option left on his deal with the Padres.

Bodymetrics scanner lets clothing stores pick your perfect fit (Yahoo! News)

There may come a time when you don't have to worry about getting the wrong size when buying clothes both in retail stores and online, thanks to a technology that maps your body's shape and dimension. London-based Bodymetrics recently launched the world's first full 3D body scanner called the Body Mapping platform. And it determines not just your vital statistics but also 100 different measurements of your body so you can always get the perfect fit.

The platform's first venue is a boutique of the U.K.'s popular jeans retailer New Location. To get your exact dimensions, you have to go into a booth where your body is scanned by 3D sensors that calculate and tabulate your measurements. Right now, the platform is designed to give advice on the best jeans for you, but in the future, it can be used for just about any kind of clothes.

While older body scanners exist, Bodymetrics claims its Body Mapping platform is relatively more affordable and easier to use. The company didn't mention an exact cost for the platform, but says the price is a fraction of what other body scanners cost, and low enough for retailers to realistically deploy it to stores. If and when the platform becomes widely-used in the?fashion industry, you can send your measurements (stored online) to retailers that accept Bodymetrics results. If only someone ties Biometrics results up with the Kinect hack that lets you try on clothes virtually, it could be the optimal online shopping experience!

Suran Goonatilake, CEO of Bodymetrics says, "Right now, a lot of technologies are coming together: social media, body scanners, and online accounts that store your body measurements. We believe soon most retailers will install body scanners and allow customers to access their Bodymetrics account online and through their phones. You will soon be able to shop for garments that fit your size, shape, and style, and also share experiences with your friends on Facebook."

Fresh iPhone Apps for Oct. 25: Toilet Finder!, Big Lens, Powder Monkeys, Fara (Appolicious)

Finally, a really useful thing to do with your iPhone: Track down a bathroom in an emergency. You can do that with Toilet Finder!, today?s leading Fresh iPhone App. Once you?ve got that situation under control and you?re feeling a little more relaxed, try your hand at some photography with your new iPhone 4S and Big Lens, a camera app that gives you lots of control over focus. In games, Powder Monkey puts you in control of a pirate-hunting monkey captain with his own ship, and Fara is a role-playing game not unlike The Legend of Zelda with a humorous story and some pretty artwork to facilitate it.

Smartphones and tablets have some great technologies squirreled away inside them, which makes for some really useful and practical applications. Location-based apps offer a lot of versatility for finding things you need, but there?s one thing that?s always incredibly difficult to locate in an emergency: a bathroom. That?s the niche that Toilet Finder! finds itself in. It uses your iPhone?s GPS to help you find the nearest public restroom.

Toilet Finder! makes use of your iOS device?s embedded maps app to provide standard or satellite views, so you can navigate a given urban area when time is of the essence. It also provides additional information about the toilet?s location, like the phone numbers and addresses of the buildings and businesses containing them.

Big Lens (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Optimized for the iPhone 4S, Big Lens adds greater power for your iOS device?s camera by adding more depth of field to your photos. It works on two tenets ? focus and filters ? and gives you greater control over both. Big Lens basically allows your iPhone to function more like an SLR camera by giving you more control over where you want the focus: just tap on something on your screen and the app does the rest.

In addition to its ?Smart Focus? feature, Big Lens, also gives you instant focus and blur options, aperture controls, and 18 filters you can apply to your shots. You can preview your photos before you mess with them and upload them to various social networks, including Facebook and Picasa.

Take to the high seas in Powder Monkeys, in which you?re the captain of a monkey ship in a naval war against insects. Powder Monkeys has you sailing around a group of islands, protecting them and attacking and gathering new weapons and items for your ship, like watermelon cannon balls and defensive umbrella bullets. When you?re stocked up, you?ll sail off and get into battles with enemy ships, in which your goal is to take them out by firing your shots quickly and past the enemy?s defenses, while protecting yourself.

There are quite a few quests for you to complete in Powder Monkeys, and each one earns you experience and money you can use to better your ship and become more of a dominant force on the high seas. You?ll also win better ship parts as you finish battles, which you can use to upgrade and customize it.

Fara (iPhone, iPad) $2.99

Combining action and role-playing games, Fara puts you in control of a mysterious young man who finds himself washed up on the shore of a weird island. There you?ll work to figure out what happened to you and where you are, while battling monsters in the style of games such as Final Fantasy or The Legend of Zelda.

Fara includes quite an involved, goofy story infused with a lot of humor in its characters and plot. It also features a great deal of hand-painted graphics, and it often looks pretty great. In addition to the story and many quests to complete, it also makes use of Game Center support for achievements and leaderboards.

MetLife: Fed blocks div increase, buyback plans (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? MetLife Inc (MET.N) (MET.N), the largest U.S. life insurer, said the Federal Reserve blocked it from raising its dividend and buying back shares, a surprise to investors and analysts who had expected both as soon as this week.

MetLife shares fell 4 percent in after-hours trading. As recently as Monday, Bernstein analysts were predicting a dividend raise of at least 50 percent and perhaps a share buyback of $2 billion or more as well.

But MetLife, which is subject to greater oversight because it also owns a bank, said the Fed blocked its plans. In a statement on Tuesday, the company said the Fed wants to subject its plans to a more stringent industry review, planned for next year, that assumes worsening economic conditions.

"We are disappointed that we cannot commence increased capital actions now, as our analysis shows that the company's current capital level and financial strength support capital action increases. We look forward to seeking and gaining approval of our capital plan from the Federal Reserve early next year," CEO Steve Kandarian said in a statement.

Kandarian also said the company was still working on its plans to sell the deposit-taking and mortgage activities of MetLife Bank.

MetLife has said it might sell its banking business to avoid regulatory issues that might arise from being tagged as "too big to fail."

Even without MetLife Bank, though, many analysts expect the company to be one of the nonbank financial firms designated systemically important by the Financial Stability Oversight Council, by virtue of its size.

In the absence of the Fed approval, MetLife declared its regular annual dividend of 74 cents per share.

The company will report results for the third quarter on Thursday night.

Reed Hastings: ?Qwikster Became The Symbol Of Netflix Not Listening?

Hastings f8Netflix announced disappointing earnings today, and its expectations to go slide into unprofitability next year. The stock is trading at around $87 in after-hours, down from a close of $120. Following the blowback from his price change, CEO Reed Hastings says, "The focus for us is in rebuilding our reputation." Asked a question about the attempt to separate the DVD business from the streaming business and create a new in a new Qwikster brand (a plan now abandoned), Hastings admits now: "In hindsight, it is hard to justify. Having separate brands can in theory make sense. However after the price increase, Qwikster became the symbol of Netflix not listening." Below are my notes. Chandhok's Indian Grand Prix dream dashed (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? Karun Chandhok's dreams of racing in his country's maiden Formula One Grand Prix did not materialise as Team Lotus on Tuesday decided to go with their regular drivers for this weekend's Indian Grand Prix.

Team reserve Chandhok competed in Germany this year to kindle hopes of racing in his home grand prix as well but owner Tony Fernandes said Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli would be on Sunday duty to ensure the team consolidated their 10th position in the points table.

"...while I am sure there will be fans in India who want to see Karun race for us on Sunday we had to make the best decision for the future of the team," Fernandes said in a statement.

"While all the emotional reasons for him driving were right we were conscious that the limited running he has had in the car this season ... has not given him the best preparation for this race, so we have taken the very difficult decision not to run him in the race this weekend.

"It is absolutely vital that we secure tenth place in 2011 to give us the platform to keep growing.

"For that reason we had to take the pragmatic decision to put our faith in the experience and pace we have in Jarno and Heikki," he added.

Narain Karthikeyan will now be the lone Indian driver competing in Sunday's race for the struggling Spanish team HRT.

His role confined now to Friday morning practice session, 27-year-old Chandhok did not hide his feeling.

"I'm obviously disappointed that I won't be on the grid for the first Indian Grand Prix," he said.

"Everyone knows the most important and emotional race for any driver is their home race and particularly in my case, I've been involved with the project since the track was an empty piece of land.

"I'm sure it's been a tough call for Tony to make and on some level I think he's feeling some pain about it as we've always had a good personal relationship.

"The team have opted to go for experience at this time but I will go to the paddock in Delhi with my head held high because I feel I did everything possible in and out of the car especially over the last three months to show Tony that I can be in F1 in the longer term."

Assange: Financial blockade may close WikiLeaks

(AP) ? WikiLeaks ? whose spectacular publication of classified data shook world capitals and exposed the inner workings of international diplomacy ? may be weeks away from collapse, the organization's leader said Monday.

Although its attention-grabbing leaks spread outrage and embarrassment across military and diplomatic circles, WikiLeaks' inability to overturn the block on donations imposed by American financial companies may prove its undoing.

"If WikiLeaks does not find a way to remove this blockade we will simply not be able to continue by the turn of the new year," founder Julian Assange told journalists at London's Frontline Club. "If we don't knock down the blockade we simply will not be able to continue."

As an emergency measure, Assange said his group would cease what he called "publication operations" to focus its energy on fundraising. He added that WikiLeaks ? which he said had about 20 employees ? needs an additional $3.5 million to keep it going into 2013.

WikiLeaks, launched as an online repository for confidential information, shot to notoriety with the April 2010 disclosure of footage of two Reuters journalists killed by a U.S. military strike in Baghdad.

The Pentagon had claimed that the journalists were likely "intermixed among the insurgents," but the helicopter footage, which captured U.S. airmen firing on prone figures and joking about "dead bastards," unsettled many across the world.

The video was just a foretaste. In the following months, WikiLeaks published nearly half a million secret military documents from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a whole the documents provided an unprecedented level of detail into the grueling, bloody conflicts. Individually, many raised concerns about the actions of the U.S. and its local allies ? for example by detailing evidence of abuse, torture and worse by Iraqi security forces.

Although U.S. officials railed against the disclosures, claiming that they were putting lives at risk, it wasn't until WikiLeaks began publishing a massive trove of 250,000 U.S. State Department cables late last year that the financial screws began to tighten.

One after the other, MasterCard Inc., Visa Europe Ltd., Bank of America Corp. Western Union Co. and Ebay Inc.'s PayPal stopped processing donations to WikiLeaks, starving the organization of cash as it was coming under intense political, financial and legal pressure.

Assange said Monday that the restrictions ? imposed in early December ? had cut off some 95 percent of the money he believes his organization could have received.

WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson defended the estimate as "conservative," noting that in 2010 the average monthly donation to WikiLeaks had been more than 100,000 euros ($140,000), while in 2011 the amount had fallen to between 6,000 and 7,000 euros.

Each company has given its own explanation for the blockade, expressing some level of concern over the nature of the secret-spilling site. But WikiLeaks supporters often point out that MasterCard and Visa still process payments for fringe groups such as the American KKK or the far-right British National Party and that neither WikiLeaks nor any of its staff have been charged with any crime.

Assange said his group was being subjected to corporate censorship, a sentiment backed by Dave Winer, a visiting scholar at New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute.

"This was done without due process, without any charges, and has been in place since December last year," he said in a blog post about the blockade. "If I want to give $100 to WikiLeaks, and if I want to use my credit card to do so, who are they to say I can't?"

WikiLeaks has recently taken steps to work around the blockade, including a series of auctions and moves toward cell phone-enabled donations. Assange said Monday that his group was switching its focus from soliciting small-time donations, which typically net about $25, to getting money from a "constellation of wealthy individuals."

He didn't elaborate, but Assange has several wealthy backers, including Frontline Club founder Vaughan Smith, whose manor house in eastern England has been put at Assange's disposal while he fights extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations.

A decision on whether to extradite him is expected in the next few weeks. Speaking to journalists after Monday's appearance, Assange put his chances of being extradited without the possibility of appeal at "30 percent."

Also looming in the background is a U.S. grand jury investigation into WikiLeaks' disclosures. Earlier this month a small California-based Internet provider became the second company to confirm it was fighting a court order demanding customer account information as part of the American WikiLeaks inquiry.

WikiLeaks' suspected source, U.S. Army intelligence analyst Bradley Manning, remains in custody at Fort Leavenworth prison in Kansas.

News in Brief: Annual Meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the HIV Medicine Association

The mystery of HIV elite controllers, a vaccine against C. difficile, blood transfusion and infection, and contaminated public surfaces

Web edition : 3:43 pm

An HIV mystery
Less than 1 percent of HIV patients have the uncanny ability to suppress the virus for years, earning them the name ?elite controllers? because they rarely develop AIDS. But researchers now report that some of these people have a chink in their immune defenses after all. In most HIV patients, the virus depletes essential immune cells called CD4 T cells. Elite controllers continually rebuild supplies of these cells. But sometimes their ability to restock these cells fails, and they develop AIDS as their CD4 T cell numbers plummet. For reasons that aren?t clear, these people get sick despite the fact that the rest of their immune systems continue to suppress HIV to practically undetectable levels, reported physician Mathias Lichterfeld of Harvard Medical School. ?This raises a clinical problem because HIV drugs work by knocking down virus replication ? which is already suppressed in elite controllers. Thus, the drugs don?t help them, Lichterfeld says. ?Nathan Seppa

C. diff vaccine progresses
An experimental vaccine against the bacterium Clostridium difficile has cleared an early hurdle. The vaccine is designed to boost a person?s ability to produce antibodies against two toxins, dubbed A and B, made by C. difficile. The toxinscause colitis that is marked by fever, diarrhea and cramps. Researchers gave 72 adults three injections each of the vaccine over 56 days in low, medium or high doses. Another 24 volunteers got placebo shots. Blood samples drawn six months after the last shot showed that nearly all the vaccinated people had developed an antibody response against toxin A, and more than half did against toxin B. C. difficile infections most commonly spread in hospitals among people on antibiotics. If the vaccine passes further tests, the target group for it would be older people who frequently visit hospitals or who are planning to do so for an upcoming medical procedure, said physician and vaccinologist Ginamarie Foglia of the drug company Sanofi Pasteur, who reported the data. ?Nathan Seppa

Blood transfusions pose risks
Hospitalized patients with infections are more prone to develop sepsis ? a dangerous immune overreaction ? if they get a blood transfusion, researchers report. Transfusions have long been thought to dampen the immune response and possibly open the door to infection, said epidemiologist Mary Rogers of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She and her colleagues identified 969 people who were hospitalized from 2000 to 2008, all of whom had a urinary tract infection. In 299 of those people, the infection spread to the blood and caused sepsis. The chances of developing sepsis were nearly five times greater if a person underwent a transfusion of red blood cells beforehand, the scientists found. Nearly one-third of the people who developed sepsis died, compared with only 4.5 percent of those who didn?t have the immune reaction. Red blood cells stored the longest were associated with a greater risk of blood infection and sepsis. ?Nathan Seppa

Bacteria, bacteria everywhere
The current quality of hand-washing in restrooms isn?t up to par, suggested epidemiologist Lennox Archibald of the University of Florida in Gainesville. A sampling of common surfaces and handles in public restrooms revealed substantial amounts of well-known bacterial culprits such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and others. Archibald?s team took swabs from four airplane restrooms and 18 restrooms in U.S. restaurants, offices, libraries, hotels and other public establishments, noting that many microbe-laden surfaces were those typically touched after hand-washing. ?I don?t want the public to get paranoid,? Archibald said. ?But I think in the current era of [methicillin-resistant S. aureus] and community-acquired infections, you just need to wash your hands carefully.? ?Nathan Seppa

MOST Cooperation Demonstrates Seamless Integration of Ethernet-based Devices with MOST

The MOST Cooperation (MOSTCO) ? the standardization organization for the leading automotive multimedia network Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) ? presents the seamless integration capabilities of Ethernet-based devices with MOST. ?We are proud to announce that automotive Ethernet will go into series in 2012 via MOST150,? stated Dr. Christian Thiel, MOST Cooperation Administrator. ?Prepared for rollout in 2012, MOST150 provides an automotive-ready physical layer for Ethernet protocols in addition to transporting high-definition audio and video within the car. This makes MOST the ideal network backbone for a broad variety of IP-based applications such as supporting apps on connected services and Internet access in general. MOST is thus comparable to an IEEE802.x network.? The MOST150 network supports today?s consumer standards such as UPnP (Universal Plug-n-Play) and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) as well as diagnostics standards (DoIP). The flexibility of MOST network technology allows star, daisy-chain, tree, and other topologies implemented on different physical layers: POF, coax based electrical physical layer, and shielded and unshielded twisted pair (STP/UTP) copper wires.

Typical Ethernet-based applications include: an Ethernet gateway lifts Ethernet Packets from a 100BaseT Network to a MOST Network and vice versa. A web server provides web content to other participants in the MOST network. A Network Attached Storage (NAS) provides a file system to other participants in the MOST network. A UPnP server/client architecture can be directly applied to the MOST system to stream audio/video data from UPnP server to the iPad. The central MOST Hub device shows how the different physical layer and topology options may be applied according to the application requirements.

About MOST Technology
MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) is a multimedia networking technology optimized for use in cars and other applications. It enables the transport of high Quality of Service audio and video together with packet data and real-time control over a single transmission medium. MOST can use plastic optical fibers (POF), coax based electrical physical layer, and shielded and unshielded twisted pair (STP/UTP) copper wires, that meet automotive environmental requirements. Today, MOST is used in over 110 car models as the communication backbone for their information and entertainment equipment.

About MOST Cooperation
The MOST Cooperation (MOSTCO) is the organization through which MOST Technology is standardized and refined so that it continues to stay abreast of the latest industry requirements. Today it consists of 16 international carmakers and more than 60 key component suppliers. They have joined together to work with the MOST Technology and to contribute to its innovation. The MOST Cooperation is prepared to embrace efforts to further develop and standardize the technology for other industries and to establish the corresponding work structures. The MOST Cooperation was founded in 1998 to standardize MOST Technology as a global standard for multimedia networking. Audi, BMW, Daimler, HARMAN and SMSC are its core partners and constitute its Steering Committee. For more information see http://www.mostcooperation.com.

(AP) ? Danny Hope has been vindicated ? for now.

Few believed the Purdue coach when he preached that his team had potential, even after an embarrassing home loss to Notre Dame several weeks ago that had many fans questioning if he should remain the team's coach.

The Boilermakers (4-3, 2-1 Big Ten) finally got the quality win they needed with a 21-14 victory over No. 23 Illinois on Saturday ? Purdue's first win over a ranked team since beating then-No. 7 Ohio State in 2009.

Now, Purdue ? not Illinois ? is near the top of the Leaders Division and talking about making a run at the Big Ten title.

"We're still in control of our own destiny," Hope said. "It would be really hard to go down and play in the championship game in Indianapolis with two losses already. It's a milestone win in some ways, just to beat a ranked opponent at home."

The Boilermakers had steadily improved in the weeks leading up to Saturday's game. After the 38-10 loss to Notre Dame, the Boilermakers rallied for a 45-17 win over Minnesota the next week and a spirited effort in a 23-18 loss at Penn State.

Hope said in the days after the loss at Penn State that Purdue was on the verge of becoming a good football team. That process just accelerated.

"Everyone showed up, everyone played hard," Hope said. "For three weeks in a row now we've taken the field with a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm."

Illinois (6-2, 2-2) lost its second straight. Just two weeks ago, the Fighting Illini were undefeated and looked like solid contenders who might hang with Wisconsin and Penn State in the division. Then, the Illini stumbled through a mistake-filled 17-7 home loss to Ohio State and lost to Purdue after falling behind 21-0.

"We're not doing something right to start off the game," Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase said. "It is crucial for us to put points on the board, and obviously, we didn't do that today. We've got to get it figured out because it is tough to try to come back every game."

Raheem Mostert ran for a touchdown and tackled the punter on a play that led to another score for the Boilermakers.

Hope stuck with quarterback Caleb TerBush throughout instead of rotating him with Robert Marve as he had in previous weeks, and TerBush passed for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Hope said he discussed the situation with Marve, and Marve understood.

"It looked like Caleb was going to be red hot today," Hope said. "It started off that way, anyway. We mentioned it to Rob, that we thought he was red hot and Robert said, 'Well, he looks like he's red hot to me, too.'"

The Illini scored on a 16-yard run by Jason Ford with 8:12 remaining, and a 2-yard run by Scheelhaase cut Purdue's lead to 21-14 with 54 seconds to play. But Purdue's Justin Siller recovered the onside kick, and the Boilermakers ran out the clock.

"For us, it was too little, too late," Illinois coach Ron Zook said. "We can't fault practice, we can't fault our preparation. This team wants to win, we have to play that way."

Purdue did a much better job of containing Scheelhaase this year.

Last season, Scheelhaase passed for four touchdowns and ran for a game-high 118 yards to lead the Illini to a 44-10 win. This year, he passed for 217 yards, but ran for just 16 on 13 carries. He was sacked four times and was under constant pressure. Defensive tackle Kawann Short led Purdue with two sacks.

"We got a lot of push today up front," Short said. "Last night, the line had a talk and we really came together as a unit. It is nice to see our hard work paying off."

Illinois' A.J. Jenkins, who led the nation in yards receiving, finished with eight catches for 92 yards. He never broke anything big, though, as Purdue cornerback Ricardo Allen got the best of their matchup.

"It's not no secret," Jenkins said. "When you study the opponent, you try to take away their best player. Obviously, other guys have to step up, which they have. It's not going to be just me putting up numbers like that. Teams are going to try to take that away."

Purdue's offensive line protected TerBush from Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus, who led the nation with 10 sacks and was tied for the lead with five forced fumbles. Mercilus was held without a sack.

Illinois' defense, ranked 12th nationally in yards allowed per game coming in, gave up 304 yards, including 229 in the first half.

Purdue squandered an early opportunity when Antavian Edison fumbled after the Boilermakers moved into Illinois territory.

But the Boilermakers got it going again on their next possession. TerBush rolled right to avoid the rush and found Siller downfield for a 32-yard gain. TerBush and Siller later connected again for a 6-yard touchdown that gave Purdue a 7-0 lead with 3:25 left in the first quarter.

Mostert scored early in the second quarter on a 21-yard run to give Purdue a 14-0 lead with 11:41 left.

Illinois went three-and-out on its next possession, and Mostert tackled Illini punter Justin DuVernois at the Illinois 14. TerBush found Jared Crank in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown pass to put the Boilermakers up 21-0 with 7:48 left in the half.

Illinois tried to get Jenkins involved, and backup quarterback Reilly O'Toole fired deep to him late in the first half, but Allen intercepted inside the Purdue 10-yard line. Purdue held the Fighting Illini to 128 yards in the first half.

The Boilermakers still have a tough task ahead if they are to reach a bowl game. Their next four games are at Michigan, at Wisconsin and at home against Ohio State and Iowa.

They at least have momentum to take with them.

"We've got a really good team," TerBush said. "We kind of have a handle on it now and we're feeling pretty good."

Significant ozone hole remains over Antarctica

Friday, October 21, 2011

The Antarctic ozone hole, which yawns wide every Southern Hemisphere spring, reached its annual peak on September 12, stretching 10.05 million square miles, the ninth largest on record. Above the South Pole, the ozone hole reached its deepest point of the season on October 9 when total ozone readings dropped to 102 Dobson units, tied for the 10th lowest in the 26-year record.

The ozone layer helps protect the planet's surface from harmful ultraviolet radiation. NOAA and NASA use balloon-borne instruments, ground instruments, and satellites to monitor the annual South Pole ozone hole, global levels of ozone in the stratosphere, and the manmade chemicals that contribute to ozone depletion.

"The upper part of the atmosphere over the South Pole was colder than average this season and that cold air is one of the key ingredients for ozone destruction," said James Butler, director of NOAA's Global Monitoring Division in Boulder, Colo. Other key ingredients are ozone-depleting chemicals that remain in the atmosphere and ice crystals on which ozone-depleting chemical reactions take place.

"Even though it was relatively large, the size of this year's ozone hole was within the range we'd expect given the levels of manmade, ozone-depleting chemicals that continue to persist," said Paul Newman, chief atmospheric scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

Levels of most ozone-depleting chemicals are slowly declining due to international action, but many have long lifetimes, remaining in the atmosphere for decades. Scientists around the world are looking for evidence that the ozone layer is beginning to heal, but this year's data from Antarctica do not hint at a turnaround.

In August and September (spring in Antarctica), the sun begins rising again after several months of darkness. Circumpolar winds keep cold air trapped above the continent, and sunlight-sparked reactions involving ice clouds and manmade chemicals begin eating away at the ozone. Most years, the conditions for ozone depletion ease by early December, and the seasonal hole closes.

Levels of most ozone-depleting chemicals in the atmosphere have been gradually declining since an international treaty to protect the ozone layer, the 1987 Montreal Protocol, was signed. That international treaty caused the phase out of ozone-depleting chemicals, then used widely in refrigeration, as solvents and in aerosol spray cans.

Global atmospheric models predict that stratospheric ozone could recover by the middle of this century, but the ozone hole in the Antarctic will likely persist one to two decades beyond that, according to the latest analysis by the World Meteorological Organization, the 2010 Ozone Assessment, with co-authors from NOAA and NASA.

Researchers do not expect a smooth, steady recovery of Antarctic ozone, because of natural ups and downs in temperatures and other factors that affect depletion, noted NOAA ESRL scientist Bryan Johnson. Johnson helped co-author a recent NOAA paper that concluded it could take another decade to begin discerning changes in the rates of ozone depletion.

Johnson is part of the NOAA team tracks ozone depletion around the globe and at the South Pole with measurements made from the ground, in the atmosphere itself and by satellite. Johnson's "ozonesonde" group has been using balloons to loft instruments 18 miles into the atmosphere for 26 years to collect detailed profiles of ozone levels from the surface up. The team also measures ozone with satellite and ground-based instruments.

This November marks the 50th anniversary of the start of total ozone column measurements by the NOAA Dobson spectrophotometer instrument at South Pole station. Ground-based ozone column measurements started nearly two decades before the yearly Antarctic ozone hole began forming, therefore helping researchers to recognize this unusual change of the ozone layer.

NASA measures ozone in the stratosphere with the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) aboard the Aura satellite. OMI continues a NASA legacy of monitoring the ozone layer from space that dates back to 1972 and the launch of the Nimbus-4 satellite.

A new satellite scheduled to launch this month, the NPP satellite, features a new ozone-monitoring instrument, the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite, which will provide more detailed daily, global ozone measurements than ever before to continue the task of observing the ozone layer's gradual recovery. The NPP satellite is part of Joint Polar Satellite System, a program of NOAA, NASA and the Department of Defense (formerly known as the NPOESS Preparatory Project). It is scheduled to launch October 27 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
