Aderall Or Nothing: Anatomy of the Great Amphetamine Drought

Well, hopefully they all die. That way demand will dry up.

The crowd at a Republican debate cheered this approach for uninsured sick people in need of health care.

Well, one or two people in the crowd, but even at that I agree that was still a WTF?! moment.

I found it to be not a "WTF" moment, and instead more a "wow, they're being really honest about their 'fuck everyone else' attitude..."

I'm no fan of either of the major political parties in the US -- both appear to be full of unprincipled mercenaries perfectly happy to sell the country down the shitter for the right price. That said, the Republican party seems much more the party of bald-faced sociopaths, actively courting like-minded authoritarians, selling the theme of anti-social, anti-public policy, and cultivating and capitalizing upon their audience's near-complete lack of cognitive dissonance. "I've got mine; screw you!" could well be their rallying cry.

As widely reported in the US media, such as the NY Times article, "Even Critics of Safety Net Increasingly Depend on It" [nytimes.com], the common people self-identifying as Republican are very often the very people being hurt by the espoused Republican approach to policy. More disturbingly, they've been so successfully hoodwinked that these very people have absorbed the Republican talking points about dismantling the very systems that keep themselves afloat, and happily parrot them back to anyone that asks.

That's some masterful propagandizing. I doff my cap, I really do.

So then having even a few people in a crowd, let alone a whole room, cheering for the idea that all those sick people will die off and thereby "solve" the problem of healthcare, that's just more evidence of how successful the pro-corporate, pro-wealth, anti-public idea machine has been.

All this really just helps the rest of us still capable of more rational thought to see the signs of where this might go. And it's not a pretty outlook.

AMP presented testimony to the US Patent and Trademark Office requesting moratorium on human gene patenting

Alexandria, VA -- Today, the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP) asked the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to place a moratorium on the issuing of patents on human genes during testimony presented at an Agency hearing on genetic diagnostic testing. AMP is the lead plaintiff of 20 plaintiffs in an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sponsored lawsuit challenging the validity of patents on two hereditary breast and ovarian cancer genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2. AMP joined the litigation because of its members' first hand view of the harmful effects of gene patents on patients with genetic diseases and their at-risk family members. "Every day, AMP members witness the ability of genetic testing to better patients' lives and improve their health. Unfortunately, they also experience firsthand the challenges imposed by gene patents that interfere with the practice of medicine and limit their treatment decisions," said Mary Williams, Executive Director of AMP.

AMP believes previous scientific and federal advisory committee publications, and the common knowledge of practitioners in the field, provide ample evidence for the patient harms and negative impact on testing associated with gene patents, and argue against human genes and genotype-phenotype associations as patentable subject matter. Further, AMP is also concerned that because the USPTO is not a healthcare focused agency it does not possess the needed expertise and resources to adequately assess the impact of patents on patients' ability to obtain confirmatory testing. For these reasons, AMP strongly urges the USPTO to base its assessment of the impact of gene patents on genetic testing on the report published by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary's Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health, and Society (SACGHS) published in April 2010 entitled, "Gene Patents and Licensing Practices and Their Impact on Patient Access to Genetic Tests."

Ms. Williams explained, "This almost 400 page report represents approximately four years of active investigation and study and is an important reference on the subject. AMP encourages the USTPO to adopt the recommendations contained in the report."

"Patients are increasingly being harmed by patents that claim ownership over the biological relationships between genetic variants and clinical disease," stated Roger D. Klein, MD JD, Chair of AMP's Professional Relations Committee. For example, a method patent relating to a variation in a gene known as FLT3 that is used to qualify some leukemia patients for bone marrow transplant is forcing physicians and laboratories to split and geographically distribute irreplaceable bone marrow specimens. "Splitting samples not only creates an additional risk of specimen loss and delays the receipt of patient results," stated Dr. Klein, "it interferes with the ability of pathologists to provide synoptic interpretations involving multiple tests and prevents them from implementing cost saving algorithms that restrict testing to those tests that are truly necessary."

In light of the preceding, AMP asked the USPTO to place a moratorium on issuing gene patents. "By ceasing to grant gene patents, the USPTO would protect patients' access to high quality genetic testing until the issue receives full legal, legislative, and administrative consideration," said Ms. Williams.

Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar: Still Hoping For Baby #20!

Following the miscarriage of their 20th child in December, reality stars Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar say they haven't given up the dream of having baby #20.

“We would love another gift if God saw to it,” Michelle Duggar said about the couple's hopes that she could have another baby. “We’ll take more children!”

Michelle miscarried Jubilee Duggar (they named and held a memorial service for the fetus) last year, which will be depicted on TLC's 19 Kids and Counting.

Duggar Family Pic

“Whatever blessing God wants to give us we’ll be thankful for,” she said in a clip from Tuesday's season premiere. “We would be so happy with another child.”

Michelle said all of the family members dealt with Jubilee’s death differently, but she was especially touched by the way little Jordan, 2, interacted with her.

“We told her that Jubilee had died and was with Jesus and she would come up and pat my tummy and say ‘Baby Jubilee gone but she’s with Jesus.’"

"She was understanding it as best as she can.”

Should the Duggars try for a 20th baby?

Commercial Real Estate Buying Or Selling Can Be Easy By ...

14 February 2012

Posted by Dennis under: Key West Commercial Real Estate .

Check into having an inspector look through your property before you put that property back on the market. Any problems or necessary repair identified by a professional inspector should be addressed and fixed as soon as possible.

When you are buying commercial real estate, find some opportunities that will let you buy a bigger building. The reason for this is that it does not take too much more work to manage a larger amount of units then it does a smaller amount of units, but it will actually cost you less per unit if you buy something with more units in it.

Hire a qualified commercial real estate attorney to avoid legal problems later. It is good to have the best lawyer possible in your corner to protect your name in case of problems in your real estate dealings.

Make sure you never underestimate anyone when it comes to real estate, not your private lenders or your investors, know what everyone is capable of. Some commercial property is never listed, but can still be sold. A tight relationship will give you inside information and knowledge about how to access more property.

Before purchasing commercial real estate, consider the area in which it is located. It is your responsibility to ensure that your property is free from environmental waste or safety hazards. Is the area around your property prone to flooding? Think long and hard before continuing on that path. There are environmental assessment organizations who can provide information about a specific area if you contact them.

As mentioned earlier in this article, you are going to need a good bit of information at your disposal prior to entering any commercial property deal. It was the purpose of this article to provide you with information that will make you a success in the commercial real estate market.

Turkey to discuss steps on Syria in Washington (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Turkey's foreign minister said Friday he will propose new ways to pressure Syria when he meets with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday.

Meeting Friday with reporters, foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu did not elaborate on what steps he would discuss with Clinton to force Syria to end its violence against civilians.

He also said he believes from recent discussions with Iranian officials that Tehran is ready for new talks with the West on limiting its nuclear program.

"I think this time, Iran has seen that there is a need for negotiation," he said. "This time, I am more optimistic."

At the same time, a European Union official who follows the issue told The Associated Press that as of Friday, Iran had still not responded to an Oct. 21 offer of more talks with representatives of the international community. The official, who spoke from a European capital, asked for anonymity in exchange for discusssing confidential information.

On Syria, Davutoglu said Turkey is looking for ways outside the United Nations Security Council to pressure Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime to stop killing civilians. The crackdown has killed more than 5,400 people since an uprising began in March.

Davutoglu said that he wants to send a signal that Assad's operations against civilians have undermined his legitimacy and will lead to his own ouster.

"What we need today is to send a strong message to the Syrian people that they are not alone," he said.

He said Assad had lost all credibility both inside Syria and abroad. He noted the large number of defections from the Syrian army. He estimated that 40,000 soldiers had walked off following orders to attack civilians.

Davutoglu's message comes after Russia and China blocked a Security Council resolution that would have called on Assad to resign. The United States, meanwhile, has proposed a meeting of "Friends of Syria" to explore ways to further isolate Assad and bolster his opposition.

France and Turkey, both of which have historic and commercial interests in Syria, have offered to host the meeting. Morocco, which sponsored the U.N. Security Council resolution calling for Assad to step down, is also a candidate.

The most urgent issue for the international community, Davutoglu said, was to force Syria to accept humanitarian missions in besieged cities.

Dakota Creek Industries to begin building second ocean-class ship

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Navy has awarded $70 million to a West Coast-based shipyard to begin building the second of two modern oceanographic research vessels, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) announced Feb. 9.

Dakota Creek Industries Inc. of Anacortes, Wash., will begin detail design and construction on the Ocean-class Auxiliary General Oceanographic Research (AGOR) vessel 28. Naval Sea Systems Command previously awarded a contract for AGOR 27, the first of the two new research ships. The recent award brings the Navy's combined shipbuilding investments in the program to $145 million.

"The ships are indispensible research tools," said Dr. Frank Herr, director of ONR's Ocean Battlespace Sensing Department. "They are the primary means by which we go to sea and engage the oceanographic research community to learn about the oceanand to develop oceanographic and atmospheric prediction systems to help the fleet understand the ocean, and plan for its operations around the world."

The Navy, through ONR, has been a leader in building and providing large research ships for the nation's academic research fleet since World War II. The latest ships will replace two vessels previously Navy-built and owned.

Designed as single-hull ships, AGOR 27 and AGOR 28 are approximately 238-feet long and incorporate the latest technologies, including high-efficiency diesel engines, emissions controls for stack gasses, new information technology tools both for monitoring shipboard systems and for communicating with the world, and hull coatings to reduce maintenance requirements. Each vessel will operate with a crew of 20 with accommodations for 24 scientists.

The construction phase will last 30 to 36 months per ship with delivery expected in late 2014 and early 2015. Once delivered to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and to Scripps Institution of Oceanography, respectively, the ships will allow scientists to continue with ongoing research efforts in the Atlantic, western Pacific and Indian Ocean regions.

###

The U.S. academic research fleet is organized by the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS), a partnership among research institutions consisting of 16 vessel operators. Federal agencies provide research grants for ocean sciences which in turn support ship operations via day rates charged to research users. The six Navy-owned vessels are among the largest in this fleet enabling global ranging research programs.

starting your online business - Factors to help you decide what to ...

These days, it seems as though everyone is jumping on the e-commerce bandwagon. The Internet has given many people the platform they need to build a small business that will succeed. Along with more competition and choice is more opportunity to create a market niche to set yourself apart from the crowd. However, with so many online stores popping up, you might be wondering what you should do to ensure a profitable business. The truth is nothing is guaranteed and you have to take a risk in any business you decide to start up. The risk can never be eliminated, but it can be diminished with proper planning. Here are some questions to keep in mind when deciding what your online store should sell.

Are you interested in the product? One of the most important things when starting a business is making sure you can invest your time and effort into getting it off the ground. The only way you can do that is if you're interested in what you're doing, whether it's a service you provide or a product you sell. For instance, if you find that selling car parts makes good money, you don't want to jump into the business if you don't have a passion for cars. It will get old quickly and you won't put as much of your full potential into creating quality products and marketing them with true passion. You won't be able to provide the best customer service either unless you do a lot of ongoing research to keep up with the latest news in your field, something that's difficult to stay focused on when you're not interested.

Is it marketable? You have to do more than just take an interest in your product; you have to make sure it will sell too. The only way to find this out is if you do your research. Find out who you're targeting and find out what they like. You can conduct market research of your own, including sending out surveys and polls. But the easiest--and quickest--way to get your answers is to turn to the Internet and search your proposed product and your competition. Although you may think that having no competition is a good thing--it isn't. There are markets that so crowded that breaking in is nearly impossible, but a little healthy competition shows you the product is desirable. Once you know you can market your product and people will be interested, you have to focus on the next point.

What can you do to make your product different? Just because you're in the same business as someone else doesn't mean everyone chooses one of you due to chance or a higher ranking in Google. Although some may go that route, the best way to sell your product is to make it unique. Ask yourself if you can lower the price, produce higher quality, give the public something slightly different--a different design, a different type, different materials. If you can't think of how you can set yourself apart from the crowd, then it might be time to rethink your choice of product. People aren't going to buy when it's something they can find on someone else's website -- someone they've been doing business with already or someone that's been established for years.

Can you make a profit? Sometimes, even if you can sell a product, you can't sell it at a price that will make you enough money. Running an online business means you cut out a lot of the overhead of a traditional brick-and-mortar business -- you don't have to have a physical store, which cuts the rent, heating, water, and power costs along with the furnishings and equipment. However, you still have to pay wholesale for the product or pay for the materials and production. You also have your own bills to pay, including the hosting and maintenance of your website. So do the calculations and figure out how much you can charge and still get people to buy, then figure out how much it'll cost you to do business and take care of your expenses. You have to do more than break even; emergencies come up and you need to be able to afford to expand your business too.

Is it something you can keep selling? There are some items that customers only need to buy once and they're happy. However, it doesn't hurt to invest in a product that people will keep coming back for. Clothes, for example, wear out and fade, fall out of fashion. People will never stop buying clothes, and will continue to order. However, you have to stay on top of things and roll out new product designs and types every so often to keep your customers' interest. Sometimes that means retiring old models. You can choose to sell something that doesn't keep selling to the same people over and over; however, it won't be nearly as profitable and you will hit a time where you struggle. Keep your product line fresh and make sure you can come up with new ideas, and you'll be fine.

Deciding what your business will be about and starting it is the hardest part of the process. If you successfully answer these questions and still need a little extra help, you can contact a consultant or an e-commerce company for assistance. As with any traditional business, it takes time and effort but will be rewarding in the end.

GOP report questions Guantanamo detainee releases (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Facing domestic political pressures, the Bush and Obama administrations released or transferred 600 terror suspects deemed an acceptable threat from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, only to find that 27 percent re-engaged in terrorist or insurgent activities, according to a report by Republicans on the investigations panel of the House Armed Services Committee.

The report, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, provides the GOP perspective on an issue that has divided Washington since the start of the Afghanistan war and the opening of the Navy prison for those captured. And it split the White House and Congress last year over how to write rules on handling detainees.

The report comes as Obama administration officials have acknowledged they are considering whether to release several Afghan Taliban prisoners from Guantanamo and send them to a third country as an incentive to bring the Taliban to peace talks. The step is certain to create an uproar on Capitol Hill, especially among Republicans. The 93-page study is likely to be part of the GOP effort to influence the ongoing debate.

"We have great reservations about releasing detainees because of the clear evidence that they end up back on the battlefield," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, told reporters at a news conference.

In a rare break on a committee that typically is bipartisan on defense issues, Democrats dissented from the report despite efforts to reconcile their differences, with four members of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee calling the study incomplete and declining to sign it.

The report cites testimony before the committee last year that 27 percent of former detainees "were confirmed or suspected to have been re-engaged in terrorist or insurgent activities," up from 25 percent the previous year. Intelligence officials had indicated that the number would increase.

"The Bush and Obama administrations, reacting to domestic political pressures and a desire to earn goodwill abroad, sought to reduce the Guantanamo population by sending detainees elsewhere," the report said. "Both administrations faced the persistent challenge of ensuring that the potential threat posed by each detainee had been aptly assessed before transfer or release, and that the countries that received the detainees had the capacity and willingness to handle them in a way that sufficiently recognized the dangers involved.

"Despite earnest and well-meaning efforts by officials in both administrations, the re-engagement rate suggests failures in one or both aspects of the process," the report concluded.

The report recommended that the Defense Department, CIA and other intelligence agencies report to Congress on the factors that contribute to a former detainee's re-engaging in terrorist activities. The committee also is seeking reports on the effectiveness of agreements with other countries.

As of Jan. 1, 779 individuals have been held at Guantanamo, 600 have left the installation, eight died there and 171 remain, the report said, citing the Defense Department.

The report noted that former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld held the view that the military should not be a jailer and there was a plan to get detainees out. President Barack Obama also had vowed to close Guantanamo, though he has met strong resistance in Congress.

Lawmakers repeatedly have added provisions to various bills blocking the government from transferring detainees from Guantanamo to the United States, or barring the construction of facilities domestically to house terror suspects.

Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, the ranking Democrat on the committee, said the report failed to take into account "the national security gains of shutting down the facility at Guantanamo. That is a goal that the Bush administration sought to achieve, and it is rightly a goal of the Obama administration. I continue to believe that the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is a black eye for our nation abroad, serving as a powerful recruiting tool for terrorists. We have the ability to close the facility, and we should be working towards that end."

In their dissent, Democrats said the report assessed a few cases, presenting "an unbalanced, one-sided view of the consequences of the current transfer policy." Democrats pointed out that terror suspects who had been held at Guantanamo had been successfully resettled in Albania, Bermuda and Palau, among several other countries, and at least 73 percent have not re-engaged in terrorist or insurgent activities.

During the Obama administration, Democrats said, 66 individuals have been transferred from Guantanamo, with only two confirmed as re-engaging. That amounts to about 3.3 percent.

(AP) ? China's government promised Wednesday to raise minimum wages by 13 percent a year through 2015 and to launch measures to generate 45 million new jobs.

Communist leaders face pressure to spread China's prosperity more widely and narrow a yawning gap between a wealthy elite and the poor majority. Beijing froze wage rates to help companies stay afloat after the 2008 global crisis but has boosted minimum pay in many areas over the past two years following worker protests.

Wednesday's Cabinet announcement promised tax breaks and loans for small employers and for jobless workers who want to start their own businesses. It covers the period of the Communist Party's five-year development plan that took effect in 2011.

The announcement said 25 million urban workers need to find jobs each year and millions of people in the countryside are moving from farmwork to other employment.

The plunge in global demand after the 2008 crisis wiped out tens of millions of jobs in manufacturing and other export-linked industries. Many laid-off workers found new jobs in projects financed by the government's stimulus but the urgency of generating employment has increased as the impact of the spending faded.

The latest initiatives are part efforts to revive growth in the private sector that creates most of China's new jobs and wealth.

Entrepreneurs were hit hard by the export slump and credit curbs imposed to cool China's overheated economy while the bulk of stimulus money flowed to state-owned construction and other companies. Thousands of private companies were driven into bankruptcy and the survivors cut payrolls, raising the threat of unrest.

Last week, Beijing announced the creation of a $2.5 billion fund to finance startup companies.

Higher wages will put pressure on some employers but they fit with government ambitions to transform China from the world's low-cost factory into a creator of technology with higher skills and better-paid jobs.

Rising labor costs already have prompted some producers of clothes, shoes and other low-margin goods to shift to Vietnam and other cheaper locations.

Wages for China's vast working class are still relatively low despite rapid economic growth and double-digit increases in minimum pay in Beijing, Shanghai and other major cities last year.

Shanghai's minimum wage is about 1,200 yuan ($200) a month even after an increase of more than 10 percent last year. The northern city of Tianjin raised its minimum wage to 1,070 yuan ($175).

Wage gains have been eroded by inflation that hit a 37-month high of 6.5 percent in July. Inflation has eased but prices of food and other goods are still rising.

The Cabinet statement warned that higher skills required as industry develops means employment will be "more complex" over the period covered by the Communist Party's five-year development plan.

"The labor supply and the needs of enterprises do not match," it said.

The plan promised improved vocational training and more government help to match workers with suitable jobs.

It said Beijing will encourage the growth of emerging industries and labor-intensive fields such as housekeeping and care for the elderly and disabled people.

Antarctic lake success 'uncertain'

It is not yet clear whether Russian scientists have succeeded in their quest to drill into Lake Vostok.

National media on Monday reported a breakthrough into the lake, the largest of more than 300 bodies of liquid water buried under Antarctica's ice.

But Valery Lukin, the Russian Antarctic programme director, has told Nature journal that the claim is premature.

He said data from a number of sensors monitoring the drilling had yet to be analysed.

"Only when I will have this I can say we penetrated [the lake]," Nature quoted him as saying. "We want to be sure we have really reached the surface of Lake Vostok."

Russian, British and US researchers are in a race to see who will be first to reach down into the waters of an Antarctic subglacial lake.

These bodies of water have been sealed off from the atmosphere for millions of years and so may contain life forms new to science.

The Russians have been leading the way with their drilling project in the east of the White Continent.

According to Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in St Petersburg, the team began drilling on 2 January and had been progressing by about 1.75m (5.7ft) per day.

On 12 January, the team halted activity to take measurements and to switch drills from a large ice-coring drill to a smaller thermal drill designed to melt through the final five to 10m (16 to 32ft) of ice.

Lake Vostok, which is about the same size as Lake Ontario, is buried beneath nearly 4km of ice. The lake itself is about the same age as the ice that covers it - 14 million years old.

The Russians have friendly competition from US and British teams. Researchers from the British Antarctic Survey (Bas) are hoping to begin their project to drill into Lake Ellsworth in Antarctica later this year. An American crew is targeting Lake Whillans.

Payday loan practices 'unlikely to improve under new rules ...

Consumer rights campaigners say more action is needed to stop consumers racking up huge debts.

Rules to improve lending practices by payday loan companies are unlikely to offer greater protection for customers in the near future, consumer rights campaigners have warned.

An updated code of practice announced by the Finance and Leasing Association (FLA) includes limiting the number of times a payday loan can be rolled over to a maximum of three ? a move that follows sustained pressure from the government and consumer groups. But the FLA only has one member ? Wonga ? offering these loans, and critics say more action is needed to stop consumers racking up high levels of debt.

The rules cover short-term loans, often known as payday loans, which offer small amounts of money for a set fee. However, charges mount up if a borrower cannot afford to repay the debt in the agreed period, and those who extend or roll over their borrowing can end up paying annual interest rates of more than 4,000%.

Labour MP Stella Creasy, who is campaigning for the government to introduce a total cost cap on short-term loans, does not believe limiting roll overs will help consumers, and described the FLA?s plans as ?tinkering around the edges?.

?What we?ve seen in America is that if you limit roll overs people then pay off the loan and take out another loan straightaway,? she says. ?A limit on roll overs will only work if you have a limit on taking out a new loan, say 28 days.?

A spokeswoman for debt advice charity Consumer Credit Counselling Service said it saw ?quite a large number of people? who had rolled over loans three times or more, but rather than a limit it wanted to see lenders prevented from rolling over loans at all. She said Dollar Financial, which owns the Money Shop, has already signed up to a code in Canada agreeing to do just that, but still allows roll overs in the UK.

Lenders have been criticised by debt management companies and consumer groups for some of their practices, including racking up huge interest charges and then resorting to the use of debt collectors when customers default.

The FLA, which represents 50 companies offering consumer credit and motor finance, now wants members who offer payday loans to spell out the cost of borrowing before consumers apply, to remind consumers that the loans are designed for short-term borrowing, and to limit roll overs to three.

Fiona Hoyle, head of consumer finance at the FLA, said: ?A maximum of three roll overs is allowed, but only if the customer has asked for this and a proper credit assessment has been carried out each time. The code sets additional standards for responsible lending and a cap on roll overs is an essential part of this.?

The Office of Fair Trading is expected to announce a review of the industry at the start of February. But Creasy said lenders seemed to be acting now to show that further statutory regulation would not be necessary.

The Consumer Finance Association (CFA), which represents almost three-quarters of the payday loans market, including high street lenders such as the Money Shop and Cash Converters (which already promises not to roll over loans), said it was also working on an ?enhanced code? in collaboration with the Department for Business Innovation and Skills and other trade associations, which it planned to launch later in 2012.

Its chief executive, John Lamidey, said introducing a cap on roll overs could be detrimental to consumers, forcing them to seek credit elsewhere when they reach their limit, but the industry was under pressure ?from people who want a simple solution?.

?It may well be that we will bow to political or activists pressure and come up with a number [to limit roll overs], but I?m not sure we will do so in the best interests of consumers,? he said.

He added: ?The FLA?s code, while very comprehensive, only regulates one payday lender. The CFA represents a number of the largest short-term lenders in the UK, so our code will reach significantly more consumers.?

Dan McDonald, chief executive of the Medway Citizens Advice bureau, said payday loans should only be used for one-off emergencies. ?They certainly should not be rolled over,? he said. ?Putting a limit of three on the amount of times a loan can be rolled over won?t make any difference ? it just means people can be taken advantage of three times instead of six or seven.?

Judge delays Fort Hood shooting rampage trial (AP)

FORT HOOD, Texas ? A military judge has delayed the murder trial for the Army psychiatrist charged in the Fort Hood shooting rampage until June.

Attorneys for Maj. Nidal Hasan (nih-DAHL' hah-SAHN') argued Thursday they didn't have all the evidence they needed to be ready for the March trial. Prosecutors insisted they didn't need more time, noting one defense expert was hired nearly two years ago.

The defense had asked for a July trial, but the judge settled for June.

Hasan is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder for the November 2009 attack at the Texas Army post. He faces the death penalty if convicted.

The 41-year-old Hasan remains jailed. He's paralyzed from the waist down after being shot by police the day of the rampage.

Chinese workers kidnapped in Egypt freed (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Twenty-five Chinese kidnapped in Egypt were freed on Wednesday, a day after they were taken hostage by Bedouin tribesmen, Chinese and Egyptian media reported.

It was the second kidnapping in days that has sparked worry about Chinese workers in dangerous places.

China had earlier said it was "shocked" by the other abduction, of 29 Chinese workers by rebels in the Sudanese border state of South Kordofan, highlighting growing fears associated with China's expanding global reach.

The 25 workers freed in Egypt were in good condition, Xinhua news agency said, citing an embassy official there, Ma Jianchun. Egypt's official Middle East News Agency confirmed their release after top security and army officials held talks with captors.

Bedouin tribesmen kidnapped 24 Chinese cement factory workers and a translator in Egypt's Sinai region on Tuesday and held them for 15 hours, according to Xinhua.

The kidnappings in Sudan and Egypt dramatize China's difficulties as it ventures into risky areas, generally shunned by Western companies, in search of resources and business.

China's ambassador to Egypt, Song Aiguo, had contacted Egyptian interior and defense officials on Tuesday, urging them to secure the release of the workers, Xinhua said.

The kidnappers were demanding that authorities free fellow tribesmen from prison, according to tribal sources.

Residents of Sinai say they are neglected by the central government in Cairo and have attacked police stations and blocked access to towns, villages and industrial sites to show their discontent.

The isolated desert region has descended further into lawlessness since an uprising ousted President Hosni Mubarak a year ago and threw the security apparatus into disarray.

In Sudan, a team of officials China sent to seek the release of the 29 workers arrived in the capital, Khartoum, on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the rebels holding the workers since Saturday said they were in good condition.

Arnu Ngutulu Lodi of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North told Reuters rebel officials had met Chinese diplomats in neighboring Ethiopia to assure them the workers were in good health. But he gave no indication of when they would be freed.

The SPLM-N also asked China to pressure Sudan to open humanitarian corridors to supply the rebel-held South Kordofan and Blue Nile areas with food and emergency aid, though that was not a release condition.

It is the third abduction of Chinese working in energy-rich Sudan since 2004.

Mark Po, an analyst at UOB Kay Hian in Hong Kong, said the kidnappings were not likely to deter China from working in trouble spots.

"Chinese companies occupy a pretty big portion of infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges and communications, in third world countries, and this trend will continue," he said.

National Restaurant Association Registers Support for Tax Extenders

( Washington, D.C.) (drinks media wire) - In a statement for the record for today?s Senate Finance Committee hearing, ?Extenders and Tax Reform: Seeking Long-Term Solutions,? the National Restaurant Association?s David Koenig, Vice President of Tax and Profitability, called for the extension of several tax provisions that are critical for the restaurant industry, the nation?s second-largest private-sector employer.

?Tax reform presents an opportunity to provide taxpayers with certainty, simplicity, and fairness, while encouraging economic growth and job creation,? said Koenig. ?Done properly, a comprehensive and nuanced review of the tax system would eliminate those tax policies that detract from these objectives, while promoting those that advance them. Specifically, the U.S. economy would benefit from reform efforts that make permanent the 15-year depreciation schedule for leasehold improvements, restaurant improvements and new construction, and retail improvements, which would advance these goals. We also urge continued support for the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, the deduction for donations of food inventory, and an increase in the deduction for business meals. These provisions provide significant benefits to the economy and should be continued as permanent aspects of the tax code. Moreover, we urge immediate and seamless extension of expired tax provisions, which is essential to continuing the tax relief and access to capital that is critical to our nation?s economic and financial recovery.?
