Balloons, Books and Beer: The Emergent Art of Willy Chyr

Back in February, we showcased some of science-artist Willy Chyr?s stunning Neuroplastic Dreams. When I met Chyr here in Toronto those few months back, I wasn?t expecting the forthright clarity and modesty in his character that I encountered. Chyr is intelligent and fun. I?m pleased to share this interview with this vibrant talent.
- -

Alright I?m going to go straight for the flashiest, most visceral work you?ve done: how did you start creating gigantic bio and molecular forms from party balloons?

Back when I was still in school, I became involved with the student circus group.I was primarily a juggler, but while I was there I learned how to twist balloons. So as a part-time job, I would perform at birthday parties and festivals around the city.

At the same time, I was getting my degree in physics and working in a number of research laboratories. The summer right before my senior year, I interned as a computer engineer at a nuclear physics lab in Italy. I really enjoyed the experience, and coming back to Chicago, I wanted to find a way to combine the scientific work I was doing with all the creative activities I was involved with.

After seeing an architect talk about how he uses glass to manipulate light, I wanted to try to do something similar. I didn?t know how to work with glass, but realized I was pretty good at working with balloons, so I just chose that as my medium. I then got the idea to create a series of sculptures modeled after bioluminescent creatures, with LEDs embedded inside the balloon structures.

And that?s how it all got started.

Inside, I Hear ? Willy Chyr

Ondine ? Willy Chyr

How long did some of those take to install? Is it human breath inside the balloons or did you use helium?

When I first started, the sculptures would take around 3 days to install with about 6 people working on them. Part of that was because I didn?t really know what I was doing at the time, and was still figuring things out. Now, I can usually build it by myself, or with one or two assistants, over the course of 2 days.

I?ve never used helium before, and I actually use an air pump to inflate the balloons. They?re pretty difficult to inflate by mouth (even the company that makes the balloons recommends against that).

I do sometimes plan out the installation, and if I do so, I will construct a 3D model on the computer and render out different perspectives. ?However, in my latest work, I?ve been exploring a more generative process of creation. Instead of having a design I?m working towards, I just have a set of rules that guides the construction of the sculpture.

Neuroplastic Dreams ? Willy Chyr

One of your balloon-forms has even appeared on a Beck?s beer bottle: tell us about that.

For the first time this year, Beck?s is introducing a series of limited edition Art Bottles in the U.S. running from May through July. I was selected as one of six artists to create a label. The other artists featured are: M.I.A, Geoff McFetridge, Freegums, ?Aerosyn-Lex, and Bert Rodriguez.

What?s very exciting about this project is that the bottle is something that lasts, and it?s something that people can keep and collect. My work is very temporary in nature. Once I take down a sculpture, it?s gone forever.

Also, with my sculptural pieces, what you see is what you get. Once I?ve finished building a sculpture, I don?t have much control over how it?s experienced. In designing the label, however, I knew that the image was the final product. I was able to take advantage of the fact that I could manipulate the colors digitally to create something that wouldn?t otherwise be possible.

Your creations range in a variety of media. What?s your educational background?

I studied physics and economics at the University of Chicago. I took a lot of math classes while I was there and spent most of my time in the library. I also worked part-time in a few research labs as a programmer.

An example of Chyr's digital fractal art. ? Willy Chyr.

How accurate do you feel science-art needs to be to the actual science? Is it okay to deviate from factual representation for the sake of artistic licence?

I think it depends largely on the context, especially since science-art encompasses such a wide variety of work. If it?s an illustration that?s supposed to visualize a concept or an object for scientific purposes, it?s very important that the work be as accurate as possible.

However, if the work isn?t shown in a rigorous scientific context, and the purpose of it is to evoke an emotional response, then I don?t think it needs to restrict itself to factual representation. The scientific elements can just be the starting point of the work.

I think for a lot of artists working at the intersection of art and science, their work seeks to convey a certain beauty that they see in nature. Science allows us to
appreciate and understand what?s happening in the world around us. But while equations and diagrams can give us explicit explanations, there are emotions and ideas that only a painting or a sculpture can convey.

Sometimes stepping away from those factual boundaries can allow the work to better capture what you?re trying to express.

Fractal ? Willy Chyr

Lately, you?ve been exploring both 3D models of fractals and you have started a crowd-sourced novel on your site The Collabowriters. I see these all as explorations of the same type of phenomena as the balloons: emergent forms from small building blocks. What drives this impulse?

Yes, I?ve been exploring a variety of different mediums this past year, and what unites all the projects together is the idea of emergence. Every piece is developed using a very similar process. Instead of starting out with a design of the completed work, I establish a set of initial conditions and a series of rules, which are then carried out repeatedly.

For example, in the past I would sketch out a design for a sculpture and then try to build exactly that. Now, I?ll follow a certain procedure, such as if one balloon branches off, I will follow that to create a new branch. Then every fifth branch, I will create a different shape and change colors. I have no idea what the sculpture looks like until it?s complete.

What?s exciting about this process is that is exists independently of the medium, and so it can manifest itself in a variety of ways, from sculptures to websites.

The Collabowriters has a simple process in which users write submissions and vote, and when this is repeated multiple times, a story begins to emerge.

This process is actually very similar to what we see in nature. Tree, mountains, and the flocking of birds all follow this generative method of creation. There?s no overarching direction, just small entities interacting with one another on a local level. When all the components are applied together, over and over again, we begin to see new and unexpected behaviors. To me, the art I create is therefore not the objects themselves, but the process behind their creation ? the logic and rules of engagement that guide their development.

Fractal ? Willy Chyr

How is The Collabowriters project going?

The Collabowriters project is going really well. If you?re not familiar with it, it?s a crowdsourced novel which can be written by anyone and everyone together.

The novel is written one sentence at a time, and for each sentence, anyone can enter a submission (up to 140 characters). Users thenvote on each submission, giving it a score of either +1 or -1. The submission with the highest score then becomes the sentence in the novel, or at least until another submission surpasses its score. Once one of the submissions receives a score of 5, we progress to the next sentence.

So far, the story that?s emerging is surprisingly coherent. It?s seems to be set in a post-apocalyptic world, and the character is a widower named Zachary who?s about to get involved with some shady people.

Black and White ? Willy Chyr

What does the future hold?

I will definitely continue to try to merge art and science in my work, and also to keep exploring ideas around emergence. It?s a very rich subject, and there are a lot of places you can go with it, so I think that will keep me busy for quite some time.

For The Collabowriters, once there?s enough text, I?d love to release a print publication of the novel. Most importantly, I want to keep exploring new mediums and technologies, and to collaborate with other artists. Recently, I?ve beenworking with dancers, creating everything from sculptures to films, and that has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

I also have an idea for a video game, but we?ll see if I have time to work on that this year.

I hope you have the time! ?Thank you Willy for sharing your work with Symbiartic. It?s been a pleasure.

98% La Grande illusion (The Grand Illusion)

All Critics (56) | Top Critics (9) | Fresh (54) | Rotten (1) | DVD (9)

A model of simplicity and grace, with emotional effects that move you when you least expect it, the kind of great film that only a master can pull off.

It's still one of the key humanist expressions to be found in movies: sad, funny, exalting, and glorious.

It's an excellent film, with Renoir's usual looping line and deft shifts of tone, though today the balance of critical opinion has shifted in favor of the greater darkness and filigree of The Rules of the Game.

An artistically masterful feature, the picture breathes the intimate life of warriors on both sides during the [First] World War.

Renoir has created a strange and interesting film, but he owes much to his cast.

... the camera doesn't point or intrude, but glides.

Funny, heart-wrenching, nail-biting, caustic and profound, touting the futility of armed combat while turning imprisonment and escape into a microcosm for society's aspirations and contradictions.

Renoir's 1937 anti-war masterpiece created a new genre, the POW movie, and with his 1939 La R?gle du jeu constitutes a diptych of unparalleled excellence.

A timeless classic of acting and filmmaking genius that uses the artificiality of war to explore the very construct of society, and is a classic must-see.

The great illusion is that these men of the officer class are somehow different from the masses who suffered the bloodiest of wars. Renoir proves that they are not.

A vividly humanist, anti-war classic.

A sorrowful, acutely thoughtful, and wholly imperishable masterpiece...

Tragic. Moving. Funny. A pure joy.

The film makes its moral point about the futility of combat by emphasising the interconnectedness of all humanity via such shared experiences as hunger, desire and friendship. It's also a ripping yarn with a vein of charming and sometimes risqu? humour.

La Grande Illusion retains its power as an example of European camaraderie and co-operation.

It ranks proudly alongside The Rules Of The Game as Renoir at his stunning best.

La Grande Illusion is a sublimely poignant and lucidly insightful commentary on the social legacy of the Great War in Europe.

Poetically photographed and poignantly performed, this is a film rich in humour and, above all, humanity towards its characters. Even 60 years on, it remains deeply moving.

US expels Syria diplomat over Houla massacre

The United States and other nations expelled Syrian Charge d'Affaires Zuheir Jabbour. After 14 months of violence, the country is approaching an all-out civil war. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By msnbc.com's Alastair Jamieson and NBC News' Catherine Chomiak

Updated at 1:05 p.m. ET: The United States and a string of other nations expelled Syrian diplomats Tuesday, in?response to a United Nations announcement that most of the 108 victims of violence near?the Syrian town of Houla?had been executed.

The State Department said it had?decided to expel Charge d'Affaires Zuheir Jabbour from the U.S., an action mirrored by?Australia, Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Germany. The Syrian ambassador had previously been recalled, leaving the charge d?affaires the highest ranking official in Washington, D.C.

Images of bloodied, young bodies laid out in a shallow grave after Friday's onslaught triggered shock around the world and underlined the failure of a six-week-old U.N. cease-fire plan to stop the violence.

?

?

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights earlier said its monitors found that fewer than 20 of the victims died from artillery fire. It was first thought the majority of the deaths were caused by artillery fire.

Syrian authorities had blamed "terrorists" for the massacre, which is one of the worst carnages in the 14-month-old uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that has cost about 10,000 lives.

Clinton condemns Syria massacre: Assad's 'rule by murder' must end

The United States rejected Syria's claims that terrorists were responsible for the massacre.

"We hold the Syrian government responsible for this slaughter of innocent lives," a spokesman for State Department told NBC News in a statement. "We encourage all countries to condemn the actions of the Assad regime through similar action."

The U.S. did not?cut off relations with Syria altogether, and did not oppose "many civil service members of the Syrian government who are working to improve their country," the statement added.

"Our view is that these are civil servants; these are technical staff; these are the same people who, if and when -- and there will come a when -- the Assad regime goes and we're into a transition that they will have to restart the relationship," Victoria Nuland, spokesperson for the State Department, said.

"We are not opposed to the low- and mid-level technical staff remaining.?

A Syrian governmental crackdown is escalating prompting UN peace broker Kofi Annan to speak out and longtime Syrian ally Russia to criticize the regime. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

'Summarily executed'?
Rupert Colville, spokesman for the UNHCR, told journalists in Geneva that initial investigations suggest fewer than 20 of the victims in the village of Taldou, near Houla, were killed by artillery or tank fire.

"Most of the rest of the victims in Taldou," he told the BBC, "were summarily executed in two separate incidents."

Most of the victims were shot at close range. "At this point it looks like entire families were shot in their houses," Colville was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

He said the conclusions of the U.N. monitors are corroborated by other sources, and that witnesses blamed pro-government militias for the attacks.

The findings came as UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan was meeting Assad in Damascus on Tuesday.

UN Security Council condemns Syria massacre that left more than 100 dead

The U.N. Security Council on Sunday unanimously condemned the Syrian government for heavy-weapons attacks on Houla.

"The Security Council condemned in the strongest possible terms the killings, confirmed by United Nations observers, of dozens of men, women and children and the wounding of hundreds more in the village of (Houla), near Homs, in attacks that involved a series of government artillery and tank shellings on a residential neighborhood," a non-binding statement said.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton demanded that those who carried out the killings be held accountable.

"The United States will work with the international community to intensify our pressure on Assad and his cronies, whose rule by murder and fear must come to an end," she said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Church billboard in Lexington, Ky., condemns homosexuality, abortion

LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Drivers in Lexington, Ky., have been caught by surprise by a new billboard condemning homosexuality and abortion using Old Testament references.

The billboard by the Bluegrass Church of Christ, an organization that appears to be based out of Georgetown, Ky., has upset several in the community for its hateful message, including resident Joe Groves, who is trying to have it removed with help from the Human Rights Commission.

Groves says he?s already contacted the Lexington mayor?s office and the Human Rights Commission, and, despite this being an issue of free speech, he wants the message taken down immediately, reported WLEX-TV.

The Kentucky Equality Federation called the billboard ?a grandstanding attempt by a local church to divide Lexington?s community and to provide moral cover for discrimination, asserting that homosexuality is somehow anti-God and making a vague comparison of homosexuality to murder.?

While we respect the right to free speech, we condemn Bluegrass Church of Christ for leaving out other parts of the Bible, a practice known as ?prooftexting? in some Christian circles. There are plenty of passages extolling good behavior, such as helping the widow and orphan, aiding the sick, and forgiving others.

Likewise, there are portions of the Bible which also contain stories of graphic violence and practices which we question today. For instance, there are plenty of passages which describe beating people to death with rocks for minor crimes, amputating limbs for petty offences, endorsing polygamy, allowing incest to go unpunished, and recommending genocide and repression of women and certain ethnic groups. Is the Bluegrass Church of Christ prepared to endorse these Bible passages?

Last year, the church put up a similar billboard about 600 miles south of Lexington, along Interstate 75 in Adel, Ga.

Daniel Moody, the Minister of Bluegrass Church of Christ, told WCTV-TV last November that he believes homosexuality is a sin, and his church is putting up the billboards throughout the region in hopes of converting people

?God said homosexuality is an abomination. Now my take on it is God said it very plain and I can always quote God and feel safe,? Moody said.

Common Painkillers May Help Prevent Skin Cancer: Study

TUESDAY, May 29 (HealthDay News) -- Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) -- which include medicine cabinet staples such as aspirin, Motrin and Aleve -- appears to significantly lower the risk for developing several major forms of skin cancer, a new Danish study reveals.

What's more, the apparent protective impact of both prescription and nonprescription NSAIDs on skin cancer risk seems to be stronger the longer someone takes them.

Over-the-counter NSAIDs are used to control pain, fever and swelling. NSAIDs also include prescription medicines called COX-2 enzyme inhibitors, such as Celebrex (celecoxib).

"Our study showed that users of common painkillers, known as NSAIDs, have a lower risk of the three major types of skin cancer, [including] malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma," said study lead author, Sigrun Alba Johannesdottir, at the department of clinical epidemiology at Aarhus University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark.

"The greatest effect," she noted, "was found for squamous cell carcinomas and malignant melanoma, especially when [these painkillers were] taken frequently and over a long time period."

The study appears in the May 29 online issue of the journal Cancer.

The authors noted that prior work supported the notion that NSAIDs may offer some measure of protection against cancer (most notably colorectal cancer), by specifically impeding the cancer-causing activities of COX-2 (cyclooxygenase) enzymes.

However, the team suggested that past investigations into how NSAIDs may affect skin cancer risk, in particular, had key design problems that undercut efforts to nail down any NSAID-skin cancer connection.

For the new study, the researchers analyzed prescription databases and health information registries including the Danish Cancer Registry and the Danish Civil Registration System.

The team focused on diagnostic and death records concerning nearly 2,000 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, about 13,300 cases of basal cell carcinoma and nearly 3,250 cases of malignant melanoma diagnosed between 1991 and 2009 when the patients were at least 20 years old.

In turn, prescription histories were gathered for both the cancer patient group and almost 179,000 healthy Danes. Records covered the use of both low- and high-dose aspirin (ranging from 75 milligrams to 500 milligrams), so-called "nonselective" NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen [Advil] and naproxen [Aleve], and both older and newer types of COX-2 inhibitors. Researchers noted the number of prescriptions issued per patient and their length of use, with short-term use defined as fewer than seven years.

The result: The relative risk for squamous cell carcinoma was found to have dropped by 15 percent among those Danes who had filled more than two NSAID prescriptions, compared to those who had filled two or less.

Similarly, malignant melanoma risk fell by nearly as much (13 percent) among those filling more than two NSAID prescriptions.

However, the same dynamic was generally not seen with regards to basal cell carcinoma. But taking NSAIDs for long periods of time, and at relatively high doses, was associated with a reduced risk (between 15 and 21 percent), specifically for basal cell cases that manifested in skin regions that typically experience relatively little sun exposure (areas other than the neck or head).

On that front, long-term users and those who took NSAIDs at relatively higher doses appeared to benefit from the strongest protective effect, suggesting that when it comes to skin cancer risk reduction, more NSAID use is better.

The researchers pointed out that the NSAID-cancer connection could be affected by a range of lifestyle factors they did not account for, such as an individual's specific skin type or sun exposure patterns.

But Johannesdottir added that "we hope that our finding will inspire more research on skin cancer prevention. Also, the potential cancer-protective effect should be taken into account when discussing benefits and harms of NSAID use," she noted.

However, "other studies need to detail the association further and to examine benefits versus risks," she cautioned. "Meanwhile, the most important prevention against skin cancer remains sun protection."

Meanwhile, Dr. William Ting, a private practice dermatologist in San Ramon, Calif., praised the study despite agreeing that many factors are at play when it comes to skin cancer formation.

"Now we have a better understanding that inflammation also plays a significant role in cancer formation and even skin cancers," he said.

And, "this exciting article gives physicians and consumers a relatively simple way of diminishing one's risk of skin cancer by doing what most of us are doing already for heart health," Ting added. Ting also advised that people consult with their doctor before starting on any blood thinner.

While the study found an association between skin cancer risk and NSAIDs, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Smart Pebble robots replicate objects the way a good hive mind should (video)

Image

Art imitating life (T-1000, anybody?) or yet another evolutionary step towards the subjugation of mankind? For now, let's just shift focus to the immediate and soak in this novel feat of robo-replication engineered by a team from M.I.T. Headed up by Professor Daniela Rus, the Smart Sand project looks nothing like it sounds and that's because the tech in question is currently more cube than grain. Measuring 12mm per side, these intelligent pebbles work in unison to recreate an object by first surrounding it and then building a shared 3D map that's used as a blueprint for duplication. Eventually, the researchers hope to shrink the units down to just 1mm in size, effectively creating a "sand" that could completely engulf and actually clone objects (think: tools) as needed, in multiples or even enlarged versions. That promise of an ultra-portable bag of 3D-printing fairy dust is still safely a ways off, so in the meantime, content yourself with video footage of the mini-modules first cyborg steps after the break.

US slammed from both sides of Bahrain's divide

(AP) ? During one of the nightly clashes with Bahrain's security forces, a new chant broke out among opposition protesters: "The U.S. is the great Satan." A few days later, pro-government marchers also waved their fists against Washington.

In a place with almost no common ground left after more than 15 months of Arab Spring-inspired unrest, both sides in the Bahrain meltdown are finding a shared target in the United States.

Their gripes are vastly different ? protesters claiming the U.S. has ignored them, government backers expecting full loyalty from their longtime allies ? but the across-the-board potshots at Washington's policies point to the deep complexities of U.S. attempts to navigate the crisis in the tiny Gulf kingdom.

Bahrain tugs at just about every critical Gulf issue for Washington. Atop the list: America's relations with Saudi Arabia as the main patron for the embattled Bahraini monarchy, and the stability of the Bahrain-based headquarters of the Navy's 5th Fleet, which is one of the Pentagon's main counterweights to Iranian military influence in the Gulf.

At the same time, the nonstop clashes in Bahrain ? and at least 50 deaths since February 2011 ? have brought critical remarks from Washington about alleged human rights abuses and claims of heavy-handed police tactics.

"But there's really only so much Washington can say," said Toby Jones, an expert on Bahraini affairs at Rutgers University. "There's just too much at stake for U.S. interests."

This is the slow-drip anger building up among the protesters led by Bahrain's Shiite majority.

Their demands began last year with calls for a greater say in the country's affairs, which are tightly run by the ruling Sunni dynasty. The protest cries gradually sharpened to urge for the downfall of the Western-backed king and his inner circle.

In a similar way, the demonstrations once reached out to America for the same moral support given to uprisings in Egypt and elsewhere. In recent weeks, however, the tone toward the U.S. has darkened as protesters feel abandoned by President Barack Obama.

Banners at anti-government rally earlier this month denounced America's "double standard."

"Obama supports the killers, not democracy and freedom," said one message. Another carried a picture of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton with the lines: "U.S. interests comes before our freedom." Some protesters burned handmade Stars and Stripes.

"Obama is the one who had people chanting about change and to fight for what's right," said Naba Ali, a 35-year-old woman who works as a sales clerk. "We Bahrainis were inspired by him. And now he has turned his back on us."

The State Department has issued many statements critical of Bahrain's crackdowns, such as arrest sweeps and job purges, and use of temporary martial law-style rule last year to convict activists in a special security court. Clinton warned Bahrain it was on the "wrong track" by bringing in Saudi-led forces last year as reinforcements.

Bahrain, in turn, has taken some steps toward reform, including ordering retrials in civilian courts and giving the elected parliament more sway to question and oversee the king's hand-picked government.

Last week in Geneva, Bahraini envoys told the U.N.'s top human rights body that the country would consider recommendations to release political prisoners, outlaw torture and join the International Criminal Court, a move that could open it to international prosecutions of alleged abuses.

Opposition groups immediately dismissed the pledges as smoke screens. But it highlighted the shifting positions for U.S. policymakers on Bahrain.

Earlier this month, the U.S. said it would resume some military sales to Bahrain after suspending shipments amid the crackdowns. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland described Bahrain's ability to ride out the unrest as a "a critical component of our commitment to Gulf security."

Yet she also cited U.S. concerns about "serious unresolved human rights issues" in Bahrain and reports of "excessive use of force" by riot police, which has been accused by rights groups of using birdshot at close range and firing tear gas into homes.

The U.S. decision brought backlash from both sides.

Anti-government protesters chanted against Washington for the planned shipments, even though U.S. official say they do not include crowd control weapons. Hard-line government supporters, meanwhile, blasted the U.S. for its remarks about rights issues.

At one pro-government rally last week, people mocked "Ayatollah Obama" for U.S. comments they claimed as supportive of the Shiite opposition ? which Bahrain authorities say is encouraged by Shiite power Iran.

Banners in Sunni neighborhoods often portray the U.S. as turning its back on Bahrain.

A court Sunday sentenced six people to prison terms of up to 15 years after they were accused of plotting with suspected Iranian agents to topple the kingdom's ruling system, a defense lawyer said.

The convictions ? which include three activists put on trial in absentia ? reflect mounting claims by Gulf Arab states that Iran has links to the Shiite-led uprising against Bahrain's Sunni dynasty. Iranian leaders have denounced crackdowns against protesters in Bahrain, but deny any active aid to the demonstrations.

The group was accused of plotting with a "foreign country" ? a clear reference to Iran ? to bring down Bahrain's Western-allied monarchy. They also were suspected of planning possible attacks on high-profile targets such as the Interior Ministry headquarters and the causeway connecting Bahrain with Saudi Arabia, which is Iran's main regional rival.

They denied the charges.

The defense lawyer, Mohsin al-Alawi, said the court sentenced six people to 15 years in prison. Three of those were sentenced in absentia, including the son of jailed activist Hassan Mushaima, who is trying to overturn a life sentence imposed last year because of links to the protests. His son, Ali Mushaima, was arrested last month in London after occupying the rooftop of the Bahraini Embassy with other activists.

Al-Alawi says two others received lesser sentences Sunday and were freed because they had already spent six months in detention.

The Understudy Reveals Theater World's Tension, Angst -- and Humor

At times, The Understudy suffers from the cutesy, pandering quality that occurs in "theater about theater" these days. For every joke about why anyone would want to steal someone else's Actor's Equity card or the stoner who's always up in the sound booth, the audience is all too ready to respond with self-congratulatory titters, signaling their status as insiders in what is often too insular a world.

Thankfully, this taut, action-packed comedy -- now in its West Coast premiere at San Jose Rep, written by Theresa Rebeck and directed by Amy Glazer -- offers much more than easy inside jokes. In fact, it's a most compelling love letter to the medium in contemporary theater, and it has the heart to win over insiders and outsiders alike.

Part of what makes that love letter so compelling is that its writers have little reason to love theater. Harry (played with pouty charm by Gabriel Marin) is a misunderstood, underappreciated actor -- you know, unlike all the other actors out there. He's the understudy of the play's title, forced by unjust financial exigencies to accept scraps of work that are far beneath him. But he's not bitter -- as he makes a point of reminding the audience several times.

Roxanne (Jessica Wortham) has it even worse. She had to give up acting for stage managing, and now she can barely contain her desire to throw off her headset and jump back on stage. Worse still, Harry is her ex-fianc?, and she hasn't seen him since he jilted her, practically at the altar, years ago. (Rebeck's contrivance to get them on stage together and have it be a surprise feels quite clunky, but the plot and the dialogue zip along so quickly that you never dwell long on your dramaturgical quibbles.)

Then there's Jake (Craig Marker, winning as ever), whom the gods of show business have treated more kindly, a fact discernible from his costume alone: leather jacket, aviators, gelled bangs, cell in one hand and latte in the other. His latest action movie, he reminds us numerous times, grossed $67 million its opening weekend; now he's sitting pretty on Broadway with a lead role in "Kafka's undiscovered masterpiece," our play-within-a-play. And he's actually enjoying immersing himself in Kafka, even criticizing one translation for lacking "the quality of disaster" so central to the writer's vision -- a hilarious contrast coming from the meathead that Marker makes Jake out to be.

The play is a love and power triangle in a rehearsal room. Roxanne and Harry are constantly jockeying for Jake's allegiance. At one moment, Jake is Roxanne's right-hand man, certifying her authority with but a nod of that powerful chin. The next, he concedes that Harry really does have a point with his actorly analysis of how a character really would hold a gun.

The triangle, however, is not so carefully balanced. Marin and Marker, who have worked together before, have delightful bromantic chemistry. When they sit side by side, sneakily eating their props together, they transform from two grown doofuses in a show biz pissing contest to two little boys playing in the sandbox. Wortham has a tougher time connecting to her scene partners; her many fits of rage feel predetermined, her screeches and shakes more carefully choreographed than honest and present.

Soon, however, even Jake proves dispensable, as dictated by the mysterious entertainment moguls who never appear in the play but whose influence looms large. But how the characters react to this news is what gives this play its heart. For Jake, Roxanne, and Harry, if the show won't go on, they'll make their own.

The Understudy continues through June 3 at San Jose Repertory Theatre, 101 Paseo de San Antonio (at Second St.), San Jose. Admission is $10-$74.

The New Math of Renewable Energy: $50 = $100

By David Kreutzer, Ph.D. ~

Suppose you could produce $50 of electricity but it cost you $100 to do so. Would that make any sense? It would if you work at the White House.

In a speech at a wind-turbine blade manufacturer in Iowa, President Obama called for extending two sets of subsidies that turn energy economics upside down and force higher costs on consumers and taxpayers.

The first extension is for the production tax credit (PTC), which is set to expire at the end of the year. It provides wind-energy producers with a subsidy of about 40 percent of the wholesale cost of electricity. So, when a wind-energy producer sells $50 worth of electricity, Uncle Sam adds another $20 for a total revenue of $70 to the producer.

The second extension is for the Advanced Energy Manufacturing Credit?originally funded in President Obama?s ?stimulus? bill. This 30 percent credit cuts the cost of $100 worth of equipment to just $70.

So there you have it. Fifty dollars of actual revenue is bumped up to $70 with the PTC and $100 of costs are cut to $70 after the special tax credit. That is, $50 = $100 after taxpayers make up the difference.

When wind-energy advocates claim that wind power is on the verge of being competitive, they mean that after the PTC and the manufacturing credit, wind is almost, maybe someday soon, or maybe later (and only if you ignore transmission costs and fickleness of supply problems) on par with conventional power. What a deal.

Perhaps not all of the costs of the wind farm will qualify for the manufacturing credit, but don?t despair. There is more. Many states and regions have renewable power mandates that force consumers to buy renewable electricity?regardless of costs. So there is almost no limit to how expensive renewable electricity can be and still generate a profit for the supplier.

And even that?s not all. Many renewable energy projects and manufacturers receive federal loan guarantees that cut millions of dollars off their costs. In green-energy math, $50 may be greater than $100.

No matter how slick the financial shell games may be?subsidies on top of subsidies on top of mandates?overpriced electricity cannot boost the economy. It may seem like a boost if you are the one getting the subsidy?at least for a while. The workers at the Iowa plant better hope their presidential green-energy photo op works out better for them than it did for Solyndra?s employees.

What To Know When Entering The Commercial Real Estate Market ...

Size is an extremely important variable when searching for the perfect commercial property. Since you do not want to have to purchase a different property anytime soon, it is important to invest in something that allows your business space to get bigger.

Make sure you know exactly what requirements you need to satisfy before you begin your search for commercial real estate. Write down the things you like about the property, important features are office numbers, how many conference rooms, restrooms, and how big it is.

Remember that your relationship to the investors or lenders plays an important role. Some properties are sold from one person to the other without being listed. Having a good network is the best way to find the best deals.

You need to know the details of emergency maintenance procedures. Talk to the landlord about who does emergency repairs for your building or office. Be aware of the response time of emergency personnel, and be sure to have their contact information handy. Use any information you can get from your landlord so contingencies are ready for the times your normal business operations are interrupted so you can safeguard your customer service and your reputation.

Take time to learn what the firm considers to be good results. Ask how they will make determinations regarding space requirements, property selection and other matters that are important to you. Knowing these things prior to signing on with them will be beneficial.

The seller is required to disclose any information they know regarding any possible environmental hazards. A large concern is when you currently own a property that has issues with hazardous waste. You need to fix these sorts of issues on your property, even if you did not cause them.

Whether you want to get into real estate or you?ve been into it for a while, visit some websites that will help you find out how to invest in commercial real estate. You can?t be too informed about the subject, so try to always be seeking out new sources of knowledge.

Commercial properties can be difficult to find, regardless of how experienced you are. For that reason articles like this exist to make it a bit easier when thinking about buying commercial property.

Sim Sadler is a real estate expert and has been buying and selling commercial real estate for over 25 years, through every market you can imagine.

7 tips for dealing with college debt ? Yahoo Finance ? Debt ...

Congratulations, graduate! Now that you?ve got your degree, you have to put it to use to figure out how to get out from under your huge student loan debt. You?re not alone ? student loan debt in the United States has soared over $1 trillion and now exceeds credit card debt ? but experts say graduates can benefit from learning the ins and outs of repayment.

?Don?t panic. You?re not going to have to pay this off tomorrow,? says Reyna Gobel, author of AudioGO?s ?How Smart Students Pay for School: The Best Way to Save for College, Get the Right Loans and Repay Debt.? If you follow these seven tips, though, you should pay it off ? or find a way out ? eventually.

1. Take advantage of your grace period. Depending on the loan, you may have a post-graduation grace period of six months, such as for federal Stafford Loans, or nine months, such as for federal Perkins Loans. On other loans, including private loans, terms vary, so it?s important to check with your loan servicer. ?This is a great time to look at all the repayment options and really figure out what you can afford,? Gobel says.

2. Know your options. Standard repayment for federal student loans involves making fixed monthly payments of at least $50 over a term of up to 10 years ? so you end up paying less interest than if you stretch payments over a longer term. ?The rule of thumb is, if your total debt at graduation is less than your annual starting salary, you should be able to pay the loan back in about 10 years,? says Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of FinAid.org. ?But if your debt exceeds your annual income, you?re going to struggle to repay the loan.? In those cases, other options for federal loans include: income-based repayment, extended repayment and graduated repayment. However, you might end up paying a lot more: ?Let?s say you do extended repayment and you increase the term from 10 years to 20 years,? Kantrowitz says. ?The monthly payment will go down by about a third, but the total interest you pay over the life of the loan will more than double.? ( Student Aid on the Web , a site from the U.S. Department of Education, offers a list of all repayment plans.

3. Test several repayment plans. During your grace period, experts recommend crunching numbers on online student loan calculators to see how different repayment plans would affect your budget. ?Start making pretend student loan payments,? Gobel says. She recommends trying out your different repayment options each month during your grace period and banking the money. Not only do you make room in your budget for your loan payment and decide which repayment plan makes the most sense, but you build up an emergency fund that can help you stay out of credit card debt, she says. ?If your student loan payment would have been $300, you can amass $1,800 in that time,? Gobel says. ?It?s a nice starter.?

4. Be careful about consolidating. Consolidation can make sense, experts say. For example, if you want income-based repayment and your lender doesn?t offer it, if you want a no-hassle way to remove a co-signer from a private loan or if you?re juggling many loans. However, keeping loans separate also has benefits. ?It allows you to accelerate repayment,? Kantrowitz says, by paying down several loans at once rather than making one payment a month toward one loan. If you?re trying to decide which loan to pay extra on right now, though, he says you should add about 4 percentage points to the interest rate of a variable-rate private loan, when comparing it to a fixed-rate federal loan, to factor in future rate hikes. He says: ?If you?ve got extra money, you want to be able to target it to the highest-rate loan. That will save you more money in the long term.?

5. Get smart about payments. Make savvy decisions about your student loans and you can have them paid off more quickly and save thousands of dollars, experts say. Here are some ways to diminish your debt:

  • Have a plan. ?When you?re being pulled in six or seven different directions ? credit card debt, student loans, retirement and savings for short-term things such as buying a home, getting married or having a baby, it?s important to have a clear plan,? says Alexa von Tobel, founder and CEO of money management site LearnVest.
  • Find ways to pay extra. ?Every little bit helps,? says Gobel, who recommends looking for painless ways to save, such as trimming $15 off a monthly cellphone bill or shopping for a better deal on car insurance. She also recommends using the SallieMae site Upromise.com when doing regular shopping to get cash back rewards toward your student loan. One borrower, she says, was able to get $300 a year in rewards by booking travel for work and printing and using grocery coupons from the site. ?That?s a payment a year,? Gobel says.
  • Don?t overuse forbearance or deferment. Forbearance, which typically is easier to get, allows you to put off or reduce payments for up to three years. Deferment allows you to temporarily stop making payments for a certain period in specific situations, such as a return to school, unemployment or having a baby. You must still pay the interest, either during the deferment or forbearance, or later, except for a deferment on a subsidized federal loan. Use these options only if you?re in a real jam, experts say. ?You don?t want to use it because you?d really like to go on vacation,? Gobel says. If you do use them, don?t overdo it. ?I don?t recommend using them for more than a few months because interest continues to accrue, digging you into a deeper hole,? Kantrowitz says.

6. Know your escape hatches. The federal government offers several options for limiting the size of your monthly payments and total amount paid over the life of the loan and even offers a few escape routes for qualified borrowers. Here are some options:

  • Income-based repayment can be forgiving. First, experts say, income-based repayment limits the chunk your student loan can take out of your budget each month, now to 15 percent of your discretionary income and soon to 10 percent. ?Income-based repayment represents a pretty good safety net for borrowers who are overwhelmed by their federal loans,? Kantrowitz says. Then, after you pay for 25 years ? or 10 years if you work full-time in a public service field ? you?re done paying. Eligible public service jobs include: public school teachers, firefighters, government workers, public librarians, public university professors and employees of nonprofit organizations, Kantrowitz says.
  • Volunteer, teach and other ways out. For some borrowers, there are options for erasing part or all of a federal student loan. According to FinAid.org , options include volunteering for a program such as AmeriCorps ? a year of service now gets you about $5,500 toward your loans ? being in the military or teaching in a low-income area, which allows you to shave increasing percentages off your loans for five years.

7. Avoid default at all costs. ?You don?t want to default on federal student loans because it won?t do you any good,? says Kantrowitz, noting that you can?t get rid of student loan debt via bankruptcy, and the federal government can intercept tax refunds, garnish as much as 15 percent of your disposable pay without a court order and even take a cut of your Social Security check. He says: ?Just the garnishment will be higher than what you would be paying under income-based repayment, so there isn?t any financial benefit to defaulting.?

Instead, if you?re in serious trouble, Kantrowitz recommends tracking what you spend, then slashing all non-mandatory expenses such as cable, cellphone and restaurant meals, and even moving back in with mom and dad if necessary. He says: ?These are tough love types of choices.?

Unusual quantum effect discovered in earliest stages of photosynthesis

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? Quantum physics and plant biology seem like two branches of science that could not be more different, but surprisingly they may in fact be intimately tied.

Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory and the Notre Dame Radiation Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame used ultrafast spectroscopy to see what happens at the subatomic level during the very first stage of photosynthesis. "If you think of photosynthesis as a marathon, we're getting a snapshot of what a runner looks like just as he leaves the blocks," said Argonne biochemist David Tiede. "We're seeing the potential for a much more fundamental interaction than a lot of people previously considered."

While different species of plants, algae and bacteria have evolved a variety of different mechanisms to harvest light energy, they all share a feature known as a photosynthetic reaction center. Pigments and proteins found in the reaction center help organisms perform the initial stage of energy conversion.

These pigment molecules, or chromophores, are responsible for absorbing the energy carried by incoming light. After a photon hits the cell, it excites one of the electrons inside the chromophore. As they observed the initial step of the process, Argonne scientists saw something no one had observed before: a single photon appeared to excite different chromophores simultaneously.

"The behavior we were able to see at these very fast time scales implies a much more sophisticated mixing of electronic states," Tiede said. "It shows us that high-level biological systems could be tapped into very fundamental physics in a way that didn't seem likely or even possible."

The quantum effects observed in the course of the experiment hint that the natural light-harvesting processes involved in photosynthesis may be more efficient than previously indicated by classical biophysics, said chemist Gary Wiederrecht of Argonne's Center for Nanoscale Materials. "It leaves us wondering: how did Mother Nature create this incredibly elegant solution?" he said.

The result of the study could significantly influence efforts by chemists and nanoscientists to create artificial materials and devices that can imitate natural photosynthetic systems. Researchers still have a long way to go before they will be able to create devices that match the light harvesting efficiency of a plant.

One reason for this shortcoming, Tiede explained, is that artificial photosynthesis experiments have not been able to replicate the molecular matrix that contains the chromophores. "The level that we are at with artificial photosynthesis is that we can make the pigments and stick them together, but we cannot duplicate any of the external environment," he said. "The next step is to build in this framework, and then these kinds of quantum effects may become more apparent."

Because the moment when the quantum effect occurs is so short-lived -- less than a trillionth of a second -- scientists will have a hard time ascertaining biological and physical rationales for their existence in the first place. "It makes us wonder if they are really just there by accident, or if they are telling us something subtle and unique about these materials," Tiede said. "Whatever the case, we're getting at the fundamentals of the first step of energy conversion in photosynthesis."

An article based on the study appeared online in the March 12 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research was supported by the DOE Office of Science.
