College Uniform Arms Race

texasx-large

By John Ekdahl

Earlier this year, the University of Texas unveiled new Nike practice uniforms that worked in a lot of black along with slick modern design elements.

Texas is taking the trend one step further by spicing up its practice jerseys.

The Nike duds for Longhorns players have integrated black with is traditional burnt orange and white colors.

There are three separate jerseys with each color being prominent on one. All have ?Eyes of Texas? written on the back of neck.

Naturally, even a change to Texas?s practice uniforms created a bit of a panic in fans that didn?t want to see the game day uniforms touched. At the time, Coach Mack Brown assured the Texas faithful that there was no need to worry, but blogger Randy Riggs at The Statesmen isn?t so sure anymore.

?When they get Oklahoma, USC and Penn State to start changing, then come talk to us,? Brown said at the time. ?The Texas uniform is the Texas uniform, and it?s not changing.?

Uh, well, it might be time to talk to Mack again.

Would Oklahoma go new-age on the apparel front? In this item from The Oklahoman newspaper, coach Bob Stoops didn?t say the Sooners? traditional game gear definitely is going to change, but he wouldn?t rule it out, either.

The article he references is this one over at NewsOK.com.

If Nebraska ? and Wisconsin, and Michigan ? are giving in to the trend of non-traditional uniforms, can the Sooners be far behind?

Maybe. Bob Stoops says it?s possible. He didn?t say it would happen, but he said OU is open to discussions about the possibility.

Stoops knows what a firestorm that would cause among older-generation fans. He also knows how attractive it would be to potential recruits.

Wha-oh.

It?s been interesting to watch in recent years how this obsession with creating new, hip, futuristic and stylish uniform elements and equipment has gone from a bit of a wink-wink/nod-nod (outside of a few schools) recruitment tool to a fairly overt and publicized one. The pressure felt by some programs that are so committed to their own traditional uniform history (Alabama, Penn State, etc) to embrace this trend must be immense. I?m beginning to wonder if we might see a couple of them peel off and give in to it soon. Of course, I hope not.

Some U.S. Senators are pushing for a common military combat uniform.

The powerful Senate Appropriations Committee has joined the campaign to get the services to share a common combat uniform, including a provision in a 2014 defense funding bill that would put an immediate end to the development and fielding of service-unique utility uniforms.

?

In a report accompanying the Senate funding bill, the appropriations committee says it ?is concerned about the high cost and disparity in protection? of the different combat uniforms with varying camouflage patterns now used by the services.

I?m sure this has something to do with a report released last year criticizing the military?s development of camouflage uniforms.

A government watchdog issued a scathing report Friday blasting the U.S. military for the way it has developed camouflage uniforms over the past decade, putting troops at risk and wasting millions of dollars.

The Government Accountability Office picked out the Air Force and Army as extreme offenders among the services lambasting their development of the Airman Battle Uniform in 2002 and the Army Combat Uniform in 2003.

Each service has developed its own camouflage uniform over the past ten years. Military service leaders have introduced seven new patterns ? two desert, two woodland and three universal ? since 2002.

Certainly, controlling costs is always a concern, but the truly offensive part is the ?putting troops at risk? portion. The prior ?pixelated? camo design developed in 2004 has been widely criticized, and for good reason.

Whereas pixillation is usually very successful at obscuring images otherwise unfit to be seen, the US Army is $5billion in the hole, with its pixellated camo uniform (introduced in 2004) being dubbed a colossal mistake.

The Daily reports that soldiers have ?roundly criticized the gray-green uniform for standing out almost everywhere it?s been worn.?

?Essentially, the Army designed a universal uniform that universally failed in every environment,? an Army specialist who served two tours in Iraq told The Daily.

The Week wasn?t nearly as charitable, saying the pixelated uniforms ?turned soldiers into walking targets?.

Let?s hope they get it right this time.

BARCELONA: Chinese star Sun Yang completed the set of long-distance freestyle world titles on Sunday with a commanding performance to win the 1500m final at swimming's world championships.

After victories earlier in the week in the 400 and 800m, Sun, 21, picked up his third gold, taking the final in 14min 41.15sec, with Canada's Ryan Cochrane 1.33sec back for silver and Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri 4.22 adrift in third.

In doing so he becomes only the second man after Australia?s Grant Hackett to clean sweep the distance events at a world championships.

"Normally at the Olympics I have two days after the 4x200m relay before the 1500m, whereas today there was just one so I really felt it at the end," said Sun after also being crowned the best male swimmer of the meet.

"I just tried to convince myself to stay as close to Cochrane as possible because I knew I could go faster in the last 100m."

The double Olympic champion had broken the world record in the 1500m at both last year's Olympics and the world championships in 2011, but admitted that a disruptive year in which he changed coach meant he wasn't in the best condition to break the record for a third consecutive major championships.

"This is an amazing night for me in my swimming life. After the Olympics I had to overcome a lot of problems, but I have come back and learned a lot through this process.

"My training was not very structured and that is why I was not in condition for a world record, but I am very happy to win another world championship title."

Although Cochrane led for the early stages, Sun stayed on his shoulder, then drew level and powered away in the final 50 metres to defend the title he won two years ago in Shanghai.

Cochrane is one of Sun's few serious rivals in this event, having also finished second to the Chinese giant at both the Olympics and in Shanghai.

But the Canadian has insisted Sun is good for the sport.

"To have someone that pushes the event is definitely positive," said the 24-year-old.

"It can be a frustrating process to finish second over and over again, but it is exciting to go up against someone like Sun.

"I was satisfied with how I took the race out and I think I can go even faster.

"I am still developing as an athlete. I want to push the race on as soon as possible in the future and have the training base to last it till the end.

"You know he (Sun) is always going to have the back-end speed.

"I knew I had to push the pace early and build a lead.

"It wasn't enough, but I know that if I can push the pace earlier and feel good about it, why can't I build more of a lead and hold onto it."

DETROIT (Bloomberg) -- BMW boosted sales of its 3 series cars and X5 SUVs last month, helping the automaker narrow Mercedes-Benz's luxury-vehicle lead in the United States.

Sales of the BMW brand rose 13 percent in July to 24,043, while Mercedes reported a gain of 23 percent from a year earlier to 23,648, according to statements today. Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus posted a 26 percent increase to 23,031.

The monthly results trim Mercedes's lead this year to 1,124 vehicles as the two German automakers compete for the annual sales crown BMW has held for two years. Mercedes parent Daimler AG signaled last month it expects to come up short again in 2013.

"I don't think we'll be No. 1 at the end of the year and that's OK," Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche told reporters July 12 in Seguin, Ontario. "We won't play any games. I'm not sure that applies to our competition."

As recently as May, Mercedes had a lead of more than 4,000 vehicles. Mercedes sales for the year through July gained 12 percent to 165,598, Daimler said today. BMW's deliveries for the period rose 11 percent to 164,474. The figures don't include Daimler's cargo vans and Smart cars and BMW's Mini brand, which aren't luxury vehicles.

BMW's status as annual leader for 2012 is based on reported sales. By vehicle registrations, Mercedes topped BMW last year, according to researcher R.L. Polk & Co.

Sales of BMW's 3 series, its top-selling model, surged 29 percent to 9,890, helped by the new 320i. BMW's X5 climbed 17 percent to 2,674. Mercedes was led by gains of 34 percent to 7,604 for the C-class sedan and 73 percent to 3,092 for the M-class SUV.

Lexus, Cadillac

Lexus reported an increase of 62 percent for the ES sedan and a 15 percent gain for the RX SUV. Toyota said its luxury brand gained 12 percent to 141,446 vehicles this year through July. Lexus was the annual U.S. sales leader for 11 years until natural disasters in Asia curtailed 2011 output.

General Motors Co.'s Cadillac luxury-brand deliveries rose 17 percent last month to 15,652 on demand for the new ATS and XTS sedans. Through July, Cadillac sales climbed 30 percent to 99,331, GM said in a statement.

Google's Android grabs record high global market chunk while Apple iOS slides

Google's Android platform is going strong, with a 65 per cent lead over all other mobile operating systems, according to new stats from Strategy Analytics.

The report tips a growing global smartphone market, up 47 per cent year over year for a total 230 million units shipped in the second quarter.

Android is the greatest benefactor of the uptick, having captured a record 80 per cent share of the global smartphone OS market. Strategy Analytics executive director Neil Mawston chalks the success up to competitive licensing costs, numerous hardware partners, and a large app store.

Meanwhile, Apple's iOS reached a 14 per cent share this quarter ? its lowest level since Q2 2010. Microsoft slipped into third place, with four per cent share ? its highest in three years.

"Microsoft is making steady progress in the smartphone market due to strong support from Nokia," Linda Sui, a Strategy Analytics analyst, said in a statement. "However, we believe Microsoft's WP8 platform still needs to improve in at least two areas before it truly takes off."

The first, she said, is a more competitive license fee charged to manufacturers; Redmond must also dramatically accelerate its support for advanced technologies like octo-core chipsets, which lag behind Android, Siu said.

The "others" category, which includes the BlackBerry OS, dropped from 10 per cent last year to a low three per cent, though the analytics firm offered no explanation for the steep decline.

Smartphone shipments around the world reached a whopping 229.6 million units in the second quarter, compared to 156.5 million at the same time last year.

"Growth was driven by strong demand for Android models across all price-tiers in developed and developing markets, such as the U.S., China, and Brazil," Scott Bicheno, senior analyst with Strategy Analytics, said in a statement.

Earlier this week, we exposed some of the advantages of the oft-criticised fragmented nature of Android, and why Apple is trying to take tips from it.?

Last night, Motorola launched its new flagship Moto X smartphone, running Android 4.2.2.?

(Boston) In an article published in this month's issue of Pediatrics In Review, researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) stress the importance of physicians recognizing that many mothers use herbal supplements while breastfeeding in order to make accurate health assessments for both mother and child.

In the US, no existing regulatory guidelines set a standardized risk assessment of herbal supplement use during breastfeeding. Because of the highly limited number of studies on herb use during lactation, numerous resources have mixed reports and safety recommendations, making it confusing for both mother and clinician.

After completing a systematic review of human lactation and herbal medicine literature, the researchers found poor methodology in the few available studies and concluded that further research is needed to assess the prevalence, efficacy and safety of commonly used herbs during breastfeeding.

"It is important for physicians and clinicians to be more aware that mothers are using herbal supplements and how vital it is to ask the mothers, who are seeking a doctor's opinion when having trouble breastfeeding, about their use before making an assessment," said senior author Paula Gardiner, MD, MPH, assistant professor at BUSM and a physician of family medicine at Boston Medical Center.

Although there is little scientific evidence to support the efficacy or safety of herbal supplements, it is a common practice both nationally and internationally.

"The use of herbal supplements while breastfeeding is two-sidedthere are benefits, but there are also safety concerns," she added. "About 18 percent of the US population use herbs and dietary supplements. We just want to make sure physicians and clinicians are aware of this prevalent use when communicating with breastfeeding mothers about their health."

Herbal remedies may be used to increase the milk supply, relieve engorgement, treat mastitis, or for other therapeutic uses unrelated to lactation.

"Since there is very limited research, it is difficult to develop accurate information on the safety and effectiveness of specific herbs during breastfeeding," said Gardiner. "It is crucial that more research is conducted in this area, including national prevalence studies and safety and efficacy studies."

Berlusconi definitively convicted for first time

ROME (AP) ? Italy's three-time former Premier Silvio Berlusconi for the first time in two decades of criminal prosecutions related to his media empire was definitively convicted of tax fraud and sentenced to four years in prison Thursday by the nation's highest court.

The tensely awaited decision was described as a historical moment by opposition politicians and puts fresh pressure on Premier Enrico Letta's fragile coalition government. He needs the support of both Berlusconi supporters and his own center-left Democratic Party to push through reforms to get Italy out of recession, and the ruling is likely to have a destabilizing impact.

Judge Antonio Esposito, in reading the court's decision, declared Berlusconi's conviction and prison term were "irrevocable," though he ordered another court to review the length of a ban on public office.

Lower courts had put it at five years, but a state prosecutor recommended in its arguments this week that it be lowed to three, citing conflicts in the relevant sentencing laws.

How the government is affected by the ruling is likely to emerge in comings days. On the one side, Berlusconi supporters may withdraw support in protest, while center-left lawmakers may find it unpalatable to continue in a coalition with a party whose leader has been convicted of defrauding the state of tax income.

Beppe Grillo, the leader of the anti-establishment 5 Star Movement, declared on his blog: "Berlusconi is dead." He compared the conviction to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 that helped bring down Soviet communism.

Berlusconi's exit from the political scene he has dominated for two decades is unlikely to be quiet. A Milan appeals court will now have to determine the length of a public office ban. And then, the Senate, where Berlusconi holds a seat, will have to debate and vote on revoking his seat as part of a process that can stretch for months, if not a year. If the Senate opposes it and refuses to formally revoke Berlusconi's seat, the high court could turn to the constitutional court in a bid to resolve the standoff.

Berlusconi is highly unlikely to actually go to prison. Three years will be shaved off as part of a general pardon for crimes committed before 2006 aimed at easing prison crowding, and it is unusual for defendants to serve sentences of just one year for a first offense, particularly at Berlusconi's age, 76. He would likely be given the choice to serve the remaining year under house confinement or opt for social services.

Berlusconi awaited the sentence at his residence in central Rome with his lawyers, deputy party leader Angelino Alfano and his eldest daughter, Marina, all of whom were seen entering the building in the hours leading up to the announcement. He issued no immediate reaction.

Facebook begins rolling out embedded posts

Facebook has plenty of options for integrating with sites across the web. In fact, its share and like buttons were very much at the forefront of the social widget revolution. But, while its friends at Instagram have been enjoying embeddable posts since early this month, Facebook has had no comparable capabilities. That small, but obvious, advantage enjoyed by Twitter and Vine is finally disappearing, however. Today the popular social network and personal data gold mine unveiled Embedded Posts, which enable anyone to place interactive widgets on a page that contain images, links, update text and even clickable hashtags. Obviously, you can also like a post or follow the source account right from the embedded content. The feature is rolling out slowly, with CNN, Huffington Post, Bleacher Report, PEOPLE and Mashable the first to have it turned on for their accounts. Facebook promises that broader availability will be coming soon, but it my be awhile before personal accounts can start embedding public posts all over the web.

U.S. panel backs lung cancer screening for high-risk groups

CHICAGO | Mon Jul 29, 2013 11:15pm BST

CHICAGO (Reuters) - After decades of debate, an influential U.S. panel has endorsed the use of low-dose CT scans to detect lung cancer in high-risk individuals, paving the way for insurance coverage of the test for as many as 10 million smokers and former smokers.

The draft guidelines issued on Monday by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force call for annual CT screening of current and former smokers aged 55 to 80 with a history of smoking the equivalent of a pack a day for 30 years, or two packs a day for 15 years. The recommendation applies to those who have quit smoking within the past 15 years.

The panel gave the screening a "B" recommendation, meaning they are at least moderately certain that the benefits of testing outweigh the harms. Under the Affordable Care Act, insurers are required to cover preventive services with a grade of "B" or higher.

The recommendations, posted on the task force website, are intended to help prevent some of the 160,000 annual lung cancer deaths in the United States, which exceed the total number of deaths from breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. Smoking is the biggest risk factor for developing lung cancer, resulting in about 85 percent of lung cancers in the United States.

Dr. Michael LeFevre of the University of Missouri in Columbia, who served on the task force, said "getting screened for lung cancer is not an alternative to quitting smoking," but he said screening high-risk smokers can prevent as many as 20,000 deaths a year.

Laurie Fenton Ambrose of the Lung Cancer Alliance, a group that has long advocated for lung cancer screening, said if approved in final form, the guidelines would represent a "profound" and "monumental moment."

The guidelines largely fall in line with recommendations from most major groups of cancer experts, including the American Cancer Society and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

But some doctors worry the rating might lead to overdiagnosis and overtreatment of cancers, in much the same way that widespread screening programs for breast and prostate cancers have done.

PROPOSED GUIDELINES

The proposed guidelines are based on a review of research studies published since 2004, the time of the group's last review. The evidence review was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Some of the strongest evidence came from the National Lung Screening Test, the largest-ever lung cancer screening study that in 2011 found CT screening cuts deaths from lung cancer.

The federally funded trial, which studied 53,000 current or former heavy smokers, found that CT scanning cut lung cancer deaths in high-risk smokers by 20 percent compared to no screening or to chest X-rays, which often miss early-stage cancers.

Dr. Clifford Hudis, president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, said the draft recommendations reflect the positions of several cancer groups.

"I think they are catching up to the science," said Hudis, adding, "We agree with them."

Of course, using a highly sensitive test like a CT scan to look for early signs of lung cancer will undoubtedly result in high rates of false positives. The NLST found that 320 high-risk smokers had to be screened to prevent one lung cancer death.

Because of that, and the potential risk from annual exposure to radiation from the CT scans, LeFevre stressed that the screening should only be used in the high-risk groups specified by the guidelines.

"We believe the benefits do outweigh the harms in the group we have targeted for screening. We are not sure of that for those of lower risk, either by age or smoking history," he said.

OVERDIAGNOSIS

The National Lung Screening Trial showed that for every five to six lives saved by screening, one person died as a result of post-screening procedures, such as a needle biopsy that collapsed their lung.

Dr. Peter Bach, director of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Center for Health Policy and Outcomes, who has studied the impact of lung cancer screening said with the new guidelines, "overdiagnosis is guaranteed."

Bach said he hopes doctors will view the "B" rating as an indication that the recommendation was weak. "They are not telling people you have to do it," he said.

LeFevre said it is very important that doctors follow up tests with imaging first, rather than invasive procedures.

"Most of the abnormalities found on CT scan are not cancer, but they do lead to further testing. That is why it is important to limit this to the high-risk group," he said.

Dr. Kenneth Lin, an associate professor of family medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine and formerly on the staff of the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force, said there is still not enough good data on the issue of overdiagnosis, which will make it difficult to counsel patients on whether to have the test or not.

"If a patient came to me asking for screening and if he/she didn't meet the criteria, I'd simply say 'no'," Lin said in emailed comments.

If patients did meet the criteria, Lin said he would press for more details on the patients potential risk for lung cancer and if the patient is still smoking, offer counseling about the need to stop.

"Then I'd explain the uncertainty regarding the harms and only order the test if they expressed a clear preference for it after all that," he said.

What worries LeFevre and others is that some doctors and hospitals will try to profit from screening, which costs a few hundred dollars a test.

"We hope that physicians will not use this recommendation to exaggerate the benefits of screening," he said.

The task force is expected to decide whether to make the recommendation final sometime after August 26 when the public comment period ends.

2-headed turtle at SA zoo gets Facebook page

SAN ANTONIO -

A two-headed turtle born last month at the San Antonio Zoo has become so popular that she has her own Facebook page.

Zoo officials say the Texas cooter, named Thelma and Louise for the female duo in the 1991 Oscar-winning movie, has been doing well.

Spokeswoman Debbie Rios-Vanskike says the turtle eats and swims, and added that the two heads ? named Louise Left and Thelma Right ? get along.

The Facebook page on Sunday showed photos of the quirky reptile and imaginary conversations between the two heads.

The turtle hatched June 18. The animal is on display at the zoo's Friedrich Aquarium.

The Staycation in Park Royal Penang

When you mentioned Park Royal Penang in Batu Ferringhi, many will tell you stories on the history of the hotel. While many locals still live in the past, the hotel has move on. In fact, the hotel has gone through a revamp with a huge renovation on their hotel rooms. The legacy remains with new directions.
parkroyal penang batu ferringhi hotel entrance
Penang has changed for good in the past few years. More places for good food and more hotels are opening on the island. To drive from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, it should take less than five hours drive (without speeding) with leisure speed and it will take an hour for a plane ride. We chose to drive because we wanted to travel freely on the island.
parkroyal penang batu ferringhi lobby
It didn?t take us long to reach Park Royal Hotel. Even though the exterior looks the same but the interior is a world of its own. I always feel that hotel services in Malaysia fares poorer compare to our neighbours but in Park Royal Penang they proved me wrong. Doormen and front desk staffs were helpful and friendly.

We got ourselves a beautiful seaview room. I love how the newly renovated hotel rooms. It looks like new!

The swimming pools in Park Royal Penang must be mentioned. They have two swimming pools, one for the adults and one for the children.

If you are bringing your kids for a staycation in Park Royal, they will love the children?s pool. It is like mini water theme park but it is always advisable parents or guardians should be around when the kids are playing in the pool

If you are a beach person, just walk a few steps and you will be greeted by the beautiful Batu Ferrighi white sandy beach. Facing the Strait of Malacca, there are varieties of sports activities available.

Having a brisk walk or even a jog at this beautiful beach during morning or evening is relaxing. Usually the sea water here is not that rough so swimming in the sea is consider safe. Jelly fish attacks are rare in Penang.
parkroyal penang batu ferringhi beach benches
If you don?t want to soak into the sea water, you can always sun bathing at the benches available exclusive for hotel guests.
parkroyal penang batu ferringhi breakfast
Breakfast in Parkroyal Penang was not disappointing as well. I thought it will be the same old typical ?Malaysia hotel breakfast? and I was wrong. They have local Penang food like char kuey teow and nasi lemak for breakfast.
parkroyal penang batu ferringhi lobby at night
I stayed two nights in Parkroyal Penang and it was blissful. Due to Rachel?s pregnancy, we stayed in the hotel most of the time and we didn?t even make time for the Batu Ferringhi night market. Please don?t be fooled by the exterior and the history of the hotel as the rooms were renovated and rejuvenated. If you are planning to visit Penang for a staycation, ParkRoyal Penang Batu Ferringhi is an option for you.

Galaxy's road struggles continue in 2-0 loss to Colorado

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. ? Hendry Thomas scored in the 41st minute, and the Colorado Rapids shut out the Los Angeles Galaxy, 2-0, on Saturday.

Dillon Powers added a goal and an assist for Colorado (9-7-7). The Rapids beat the Galaxy for the first time in seven meetings and had been 0-5-1 over that span.

Colorado is unbeaten, 4-0-2 in its last six games after going through a 0-4-1 stretch.

Thomas found space between two defenders when Powers lined up for a corner kick. Powers put the ball right on the head of Thomas, whose header sailed past goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini.

Los Angeles (10-9-3) was looking for its fifth win in seven matches. The Galaxy was shut out for the sixth time this season in falling to 1-6-0 in its last seven road games.

Colorado added a goal in the 47th minute when Edson Buddle found Powers in stride just over the midfield stripe. Cudicini came out to stop the shot, but Powers got the ball under the lunge of Cudicini.

The Galaxy was without Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane. Donovan missed his fifth straight game due to service with the U.S. national team while Keane sat out with a left hip flexor strain suffered the previous weekend.

Hector Jimenez found an opening in the 15th minute, but fired a shot over the crossbar for the Galaxy. Juninho barely missed with a shot from 30 yards in the 22nd minute. His shot grazed the left post.

Colorado's Clint Irwin caught a shot from the left wing by Galaxy's Todd Dunivant at the close of the half in added time.

Referee Juan Guzman issued three yellow cards in the first half.

Thomas drew a yellow card for upending Juninho in the ninth minute. Thomas will serve his second suspension of the season when the team plays Aug. 3 against Real Salt Lake.

The Galaxy's Juninho and Pablo Mastroeni, a former Colorado midfielder, received theirs moments apart after disputing non-calls. Juninho had been hauled down by Shane O'Neill in the 30th minute.

The Galaxy didn't test Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin. Irwin produced his eighth shutout of the season.

West Penn Allegheny hospitals cut 262 jobs, 200 vacant positions

Allegheny Health Network said Friday it is laying off 262 employees and eliminating 200 vacant positions in its West Penn Allegheny Health System.

Dan Laurent, spokesman for Highmark?s Allegheny Health Network confirmed the cuts Friday afternoon.

According to Laurent, the cuts ?span every level of the workforce? at all five of the hospitals in the WPAHS network, including Allegheny General, West Penn, Forbes, Allegheny Valley and Canonsburg units. The reductions also impacted the WPAHS corporate.

Laurent declined to provide exact numbers of cuts for each of the hospitals.

While the cuts were across the spectrum of positions, Laurent said few of the layoffs occurred in direct-patient care.

Incredible Technology: How Supercomputers Solve Giant Problems

Editor's Note: In this weekly series, LiveScience explores how technology drives scientific exploration and discovery. - See more at: http://www.livescience.com/37671-how-to-do-brain-surgery.html#sthash.NIJ821It.dpuf

Editor's Note: In this weekly series, LiveScience explores how technology drives scientific exploration and discovery.

Today's supercomputers are marvels of computational power, and they are being used to tackle some of the world's biggest scientific problems.

Current models are tens of thousands of times faster than the average desktop computer. They achieve these lightning-fast speeds via parallel processing, in which many computer processors perform computations simultaneously. Supercomputers are used for everything from forecasting weather to modeling the human brain.

What sets supercomputers apart is the size and difficulty of the tasks they can tackle and solve, said Jack Wells, director of science at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. [9 Super-Cool Uses for Supercomputers]

"Supercomputers can do supersize problems," Wells said.

Supercomputers are often built from the same components as regular computers, but they're integrated so they can work together, Wells told LiveScience.

The first supercomputers were developed in the 1960s, designed by electrical engineer Seymour Cray of Control Data Corporation (CDC). In 1964, the company released the CDC 6600, often considered to be the world's first supercomputer. Cray later formed his own company, which made the Cray-1 in 1976 and Cray-2 in 1985.

These early supercomputers had only a few processors, but by the 1990s, the United States and Japan were making ones with thousands of processors. Fujitsu's Numerical Wind Tunnel became the fastest supercomputer in 1994 with 166 processors, followed by the Hitachi SR2201, in 1996, with more than 2,000 processors. The Intel Paragon edged into the lead in 1993. As of June 2013, China's Tianhe-2 was the world's fastest supercomputer.

Supercomputer performance is measured in "flops," short for floating-point operations per second. Today's machines can achieve speeds in petaflops ? quadrillions of flops.

The TOP500 is a ranking of the world's 500 most powerful supercomputers. China?s Tianhe-2 achieves 33.86 petaflops, while the Cray Titan reaches 17.59 petaflops, and IBM's Sequoia ranks third at 17.17 petaflops.

Solving supersize problems

Researchers have harnessed the number-crunching power of supercomputers to work on complex problems in fields ranging from astrophysics to neuroscience.

These computational behemoths have been used to answer questions about the creation of the universe during the Big Bang. Researchers at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) simulated how the first galaxies formed, and scientists at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif., simulated the birth of stars. Using computers like IBM's Roadrunner at Los Alamos National Laboratory, physicists have probed the mysteries of dark matter, the mysterious substance that makes up roughly 25 percent of the mass of the universe. [101 Astronomy Images That Will Blow Your Mind]

Weather forecasting is another area that relies heavily on supercomputing. For example, forecasters used the TACC supercomputer Ranger to determine the path of Hurricane Ike in 2008, improving the five-day hurricane forecast by 15 percent. Climate scientists use supercomputers to model global climate change, a challenging task involving hundreds of variables.

Testing nuclear weapons has been banned in the United States since 1992, but supercomputer simulations ensure that the nation's nukes remain safe and functional. IBM's Sequoia supercomputer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California is designed to replace testing of nuclear explosions with improved simulations. ?

Increasingly, neuroscientists have turned their attention to the daunting task of modeling the human brain. The Blue Brain project at the ?cole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne in Switzerland, led by Henry Markram,?aims to create a complete, virtual human brain. The project scientists are using an IBM Blue Gene supercomputer to simulate the molecular structures of real mammalian brains. In 2006, Blue Brain successfully simulated a complete column of neurons in the rat brain.

Sharing the load

The quintessential supercomputer typically consists of large datacenters filled with many machines that are physically linked together. But distributed computing could also be considered a form of supercomputing; it consists of many individual computers connected by a network (such as the Internet) that devote some portion of their processing power to a large problem.

A well-known example is the SETI@home (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence at home) project, in which millions of people run a program on their computers that looks for signs of intelligent life in radio signals. Another is "Folding at home," a project to predict the 3D structure of proteins ? the biological workhorses that perform vital tasks in our bodies ? from the sequence of molecular chains from which they're made.

In the future, supercomputers will edge toward "exascale" capabilities ? about 50 times faster than current systems, Wells said. This will require greater energy, so energy efficiency will likely become an important goal of future systems. Another trend will be integrating large amounts of data for applications like discovering new materials and biotechnologies, Wells said.

Sky's Now TV box is a ?9.99 Roku clone that streams iPlayer and more

Sky Now TV box is a 999 Roku clone that streams iPlayer and more

BSkyB started investing in Roku last year and it's leveraged that involvement to develop this new Now TV set-top box. Going on sale today for just £9.99 (including shipping), it brings a rebranded Roku 2 XD (no gaming remote) with software built for Sky's IPTV platform and a curated list of additional channels. Notably missing from the list are Netflix, Lovefilm, ITV Player, and 4oD, however Now TV (of course), iPlayer, Demand Five, Spotify, Facebook and several Sky channels are included. It gives up a bit in flexibility compared to the standard player, but the ultra-low entry price certainly makes for a compelling option. Roku is facing more competition than ever with new game consoles, Google's Chromecast and even Apple's TV ambitions, we'll see if partnering with traditional providers makes it the "operating system for TVs" CEO Anthony Wood wants it to be.

For Sky, this is just part of a multi-pronged plan to move its TV offerings into the future, detailed in today's earnings report. Starting in September it will offer a WiFi equipped Sky+HD box to customers as the standard, and low cost wireless adapters to those with older hardware that isn't already connected. It's also enhancing Sky Go, with plans to add 10 new channels in the next year while marketing Sky Go Extra more. Finally, it's adding more content to the Catch Up TV and Sky Store VOD bundle -- check the PDF linked below for more details.

Greece woos tourists with longer shopping hours

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece's parliament has approved legislation to extend Sunday opening hours for stores, in an effort to boost spending by tourists and stimulate the crisis-hit economy.

Lawmakers voted Wednesday in favor of legislation allowing department stores to open on seven Sundays during the year and smaller, independent shops the right to open every Sunday. Earlier rules kept most stores closed.

Small business associations, left-wing opposition parties, and senior members of the Greek Orthodox Church strongly oppose the new measures. Store owners and the Greek Communist party staged demonstrations in central Athens late Tuesday.

Greece is expecting a boost to its key tourism industry this year. More than a million visitors arrived in the January-March period, a 4.6 percent increase from 2012, according to the Bank of Greece.
