Well, I THINK I salvaged the fucker.
Uh, sorry. ?
The weekend that is.
Weekends with the family. ?They're so....familial.
What salvaged the god damned thing? (sorry Debbie)
1. I talked to my friend Diana forever on Friday night about silver and she let me ramble on a bit too. God I love her.
2. I polished all the coin silver spoons ?we got from my parents (well, except that when I went looking for AA batteries a little while ago I found two more in our junk drawer....geesh).
3. Ernie and I went to the antique show at Gordyville in Rantoul. We walked in and I could smell the unique combination of antiques and dirt and possibly horses. There are filthy dusty speakers up by the ceiling and slightly scratchy Christmas Carols were coming out of them. I was supremely happy at that moment. Supremely.
4. I bought two things I absolutely didn't need....a Buffalo Blue Willow little bowl in perfect shape (didn't need it) AND a flint Loop compote. I don't even know what to do with the Loop compotes I HAVE but damn....it was a great price and a slightly different shape than those we have....and I just felt that I should rescue it. It kinda needed me.
5. My two brothers-in-law and our beloved friend Jeff managed to help haul the jukebox out of the basement into the dining room ?with Ernie while Owen assisted/supervised. It's not working as of yet but it seems to WANT to and it used to work so we have great hope and it makes the two blondes of the family INCREDIBLY happy to have it up here.
6. We got our Christmas trees. Ernie and I picked out a classic skinny, cheap balsam from Prairie Gardens for $19.97 for our dining room. Then Owen said, "Well, since you and Daddy picked that one out, then Leo and I get to pick out the other, right?" I of course, innocently (how long have I been a parent?) said, "sure, you can pick out the other one. What the hell is wrong with me? Suffice to say it's the first time we broke with tradition and got a tree more expensive than the $19.97.....but when Owen looked ?up at me and so quietly said, "I love it" and Leo smiled happily, looking at me with those big brown eyes....well God damn it (sorry Debbie)...what the hell was I supposed to do?
7. The expensive tree is HUGE and phenomenonally fragrant. In recent years I have wondered whether my nose is just tired out from middle age (Christ...I'm middle aged) or if trees really don't smell as good as they used to. I remember when I was a kid getting up the morning after Dad brought in the tree at night and smelling it at the other end of the house immediately. Well....the boys have restored my faith in the fragrance of Christmas trees.
8. Putting up all the little Christmas trees on the mantel with my sweet boys.
I won't go into the rest of the weekend because it sucked...complete with missing the Robbie Fulks/Audrey Auld show at the Rosebowl....but it was everyday life crap and God knows we all deal with it. Ugh.
So...admire my coin silver. It's making me DAMNED happy.
Now everybody else is asleep upstairs. I've taken a bunch of ibuprofen and thrown in a tramadol for good measure and I think my headache of the last 36 hours might finally be fading. I'm thinking of going upstairs and bringing a glass of wine and my kindle....perhaps a Unisom to top it off.
Monday again and I finish off the day with a mammogram.
Geesh.?
But then again....the house will smell like a Christmas tree when I finally get home so I guess I can't complain. Can't complain.
