Union members from Northwest Indiana joined the throngs of protestors that arrived at the Statehouse on Wednesday for the opening day of the 2012 Indiana General Assembly.

Gary-based Teamsters Local 142 member James Ford contended the legislation would regress workers? rights. In right-to-work states, unions are restricted from charging dues or fees that fund representation for employees.

?We?re no different from any other business out there,? Ford said. ?A lawyer takes a fee to represent you. Chambers of commerce make businesses pay fees to represent them. We?re just like everyone else. It?s a simple case of corporations being greedier and wanting to put us down.?

Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma said he doesn?t see a scenario where right-to-work legislation is pulled off the table.

?It?s the number one jobs issue we can address this session and the number one issue is jobs,? Bosma said. ?These are middle class jobs we?re talking about. We have to support our middle class here in this state. That?s exactly what it is about despite the rhetoric you hear from the other side.?

International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 4 Field Representative Dale Johnsen called right to work a ?fallacy? that?s backed by out-of-state interests.

?It is not going to create any more jobs,? said Johnsen, with the Merrillville office. ?They keep making the statement that it will create jobs and that companies won?t come to Indiana because we?re not right to work.?

Northwest Indiana Federation of Labor Executive Board Member Judy Terek Lennon said right to work will affect her family.

?No one asked my opinion whether I want the government to get involved in a private contract between my union and my employer,? said Terek Lennon of Munster.
